Description
Akira Hattori is an editor for the fictional Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, born on April 27, 1980, in Akita Prefecture, Japan. He has a thin build and a somewhat odd appearance, characterized by a wide-eyed gaze and distinctive, prominent lips. Hattori is consistently calm, calculated, and highly professional, rarely raising his voice and approaching his work with a wise, level-headed demeanor. His primary motivation is to cultivate truly excellent and original manga, and he is critical of works that become overly standardized due to an overreliance on temporary reader questionnaires. He is willing to take risks and even bend the rules to achieve the best results for his authors. Hattori is first introduced as the editor for the protagonist duo Ashirogi Muto, consisting of Moritaka Mashiro and Akito Takagi. He provides a balanced critique of their first manuscript, The Two Earths, and guides them to their first serialization, Detective Trap. Due to his other responsibilities, which include editing the hit series One Piece, he is forced to hand them over to a less experienced editor, Goro Miura. Despite no longer being their direct editor, Hattori remains deeply interested in their progress, offering off-hand advice and watching over them from a distance. He eventually returns as their editor for the serialization of their later work, PCP (Perfect Crime Party). Hattori has a significant professional connection with the prodigy Eiji Nizuma, and he handles an unreciprocated romantic interest from the talented writer Aiko Iwase with strict professionalism. His notable abilities include an exceptional eye for quality, managing the stress of creators, and contributing creatively to story development, such as devising plots that suit a particular artist. He is also willing to take full responsibility for major decisions, such as pushing for an anime adaptation, demonstrating his role as a true partner in manga creation.
