Description
Aoi Hyōdō is the nephew of Satsuki Hyōdō, the owner of the Maid Latte café where the protagonist Misaki Ayuzawa works. He is a fourteen-year-old second-year middle school student who is known for being a professional cross-dresser and a popular net idol who goes by the name Aoi-chan.

Physically, Aoi possesses very androgynous features, including large blue eyes with long lashes and dark purple hair that he typically wears in a bowl cut. In his everyday appearance, he is considered a very cute boy, but his transformation into his net idol persona involves wearing a curly blonde wig and borrowing his aunt Satsuki’s old dresses, which leads most people to mistake him for a girl. As he grows older, his voice deepens and he becomes taller, eventually reaching the same height as Misaki, which initially causes him great distress.

Aoi has a strong affinity for cute, pretty, and fluffy things, delicate laces, and being the center of attention. He is generally short-tempered, has very little patience, and harbors dislikes for dirty things, boring knowledge, adults, children, school, his classmates, and studying. He often becomes embarrassed after showing kindness or affection toward someone and will suddenly become angry to conceal his true feelings. His father, who is Satsuki’s older brother, disapproves strongly of his cross-dressing, frequently throwing away his clothes and kicking him out of the house, which is why he often stays with Satsuki at Maid Latte.

The motivations driving Aoi stem from a painful past in which he was mocked and bullied at school for his feminine features and his interest in girlish clothing and cute things. As a response to this mistreatment, he began toying with the feelings of men as his female alter ego, believing that making them fall for him would earn him respect and validate his cuteness. This revenge-driven approach is his way of regaining control and proving his worth to those who ridiculed him.

In the story, Aoi serves as both a minor antagonist and a supporting character who challenges Misaki in unique ways. He is first introduced when he comes to work at Maid Latte and immediately tries to seduce Takumi Usui, the male lead, seeing him as a challenge since Takumi is one of the few men who does not fall for his charms. His true gender is eventually exposed by Misaki, who slaps him and scolds him to face his challenges head-on rather than trying to manipulate others. This confrontation becomes a turning point for him.

Aoi has several key relationships that define his role in the narrative. With Misaki, he initially presents a facade of hatred, frequently scolding her for her poor fashion sense and unfeminine strength, but he eventually develops a crush on her. He never confesses these feelings because he recognizes that she truly loves Takumi. He later yells at Misaki for being indecisive about her relationship with Takumi and for unintentionally leading another boy on, which ultimately pushes her to admit her true feelings to herself and others. With Takumi, Aoi experiences frustration because he cannot be seduced, but he later comes to respect him. Satsuki acts as his supportive aunt and caretaker who provides him with clothes and a place to stay. His aunt Nagisa trained him in beach volleyball, making him a skilled player. He also forms a friendship with Honoka, a fellow worker at Maid Latte, whom he eventually begins dating.

Aoi undergoes significant development throughout the series. He struggles with his voice changing during puberty, fearing that he can no longer maintain his net idol persona. However, with encouragement from Honoka and others, he learns to embrace fashion while still maintaining his masculinity, transitioning from wearing Lolita-style dresses to more stylish and tailored suits. He ultimately becomes a fashion designer working in Paris and is in a long-term relationship with Honoka, having dated her for five years by the time of Misaki and Takumi’s wedding.

In terms of abilities, Aoi is a skilled volleyball player who was trained by his aunt Nagisa. He is also talented in sewing and fashion design, creating his own costumes as well as designing clothes for Misaki. He is known to be good at studying despite claiming to hate it.
