Description
Babbo is a unique and sentient ÄRM, a magical weapon or tool, that becomes the partner of the main protagonist Ginta Toramizu. What makes Babbo truly extraordinary is that he possesses a human soul, making him the only known ÄRM capable of independent thought and speech without needing to be activated. His origins trace back many years to the magic kingdom of Caldia, where a former Elder of Caldia had his soul downloaded into the ÄRM, granting him his consciousness and personality. This powerful ÄRM was later stolen by the antagonists Phantom and Diana and was used as a weapon in their campaign to conquer MÄR-Heaven. During this period, a pivotal event occurred when Phantom fought a man named Danna; the consciousness of the evil Caldia's Orb was transferred into Danna's body, while Danna's soul was simultaneously downloaded into Babbo. Although Babbo retained his own dominant personality, this event caused him to lose all his memories of his past before the transfer.
In terms of appearance, Babbo's default form is that of an oversized metal kendama, a traditional Japanese toy consisting of a hammer-shaped handle connected by a string to a ball. The ball is where Babbo's face is located, which features a long, thick, cylindrical nose, a thick, dark mustache, thick eyebrows, and a soul patch. The hammer part of his body has a cross design with four holes on each side that can be filled with magic stones to unlock different transformations. Babbo's most defining personality trait is his oversized ego and immense self-love. He constantly refers to himself as an "elder" or a "gentleman" and frequently tries to act dandy or elegant, often with comical results given his unusual shape. He can be eccentric, boastful, and sometimes mocking toward others, but he ultimately forms a deep and loyal bond with his user, Ginta.
Babbo's role in the story begins when he is discovered by Ginta and the witch Dorothy. He had been sealed inside a chest in a cave by Alan of the Cross Guard, a seal that could only be opened by someone completely devoid of magical power, a description that fit Ginta perfectly. Initially, Babbo was reluctant to accept Ginta as his master, insisting that Ginta was his servant instead, but the two quickly developed a strong partnership and friendship. Throughout the series, Babbo serves as both a powerful weapon and a constant companion and advisor to Ginta, helping him navigate the dangers of MÄR-Heaven. His key relationships include his original wielder, Phantom, and his current partner, Ginta, as well as the lingering soul of Danna within him. The relationship between Ginta and Babbo is central to the narrative, growing from a begrudging alliance to a true camaraderie where they rely on each other in battle.
Babbo's most remarkable ability is his power to download the souls and personalities of others into himself, which is the very reason for his own sentience. In his base form, he can attack by swinging his weighted chain to launch himself at opponents, and both the chain and the size of the hammer and ball can be changed at will, growing to massive proportions. However, Babbo's true potential is unlocked through his "Versions," a series of transformations that are accessed by inserting magic stones into the holes on his body. The data for these transformations is recorded from the user's imagination, meaning the forms are directly influenced by the wielder's creativity. The different Versions Ginta develops include Version 1 A and B, which transform Babbo into a hammer gauntlet or a dagger for close-quarters combat; Version 2, the Bubble Launcher, a gun that fires exploding bubbles for long-range attacks; Version 3, Gargoyle, a powerful guardian that can fire a devastating beam from a ring in its mouth but is very dangerous to use; Version 4, Alice, a holy angelic form that specializes in healing magic and counteracting darkness-based curses; Version 5, Cushion Jelly, which encases Ginta in a giant pudding-like substance that absorbs physical attacks; and Version 6, Puss in Boots, a large, fast feline guardian capable of wielding other ÄRMs independently. Higher Versions include a form to reunite separated souls and bodies and a form to replicate the Gate Keeper Clown for dimensional travel, with some variations between the manga and anime adaptations. Through these abilities, Babbo evolves from a mysterious, memory-lost artifact into the most versatile and trusted weapon in Ginta's arsenal.
