TV-Series
Description
Himeko Katagiri is a main character in the class of first-year students at Peach Moon Academy. She is a teenage girl with short, blue bob-cut hair, notable for a prominent cowlick, often called an "idiot hair" or ahoge, that stands up from the top of her head. Her typical school uniform consists of a yellow sailor-style top with blue linings and a red necktie over a black turtleneck undershirt, paired with a blue pleated skirt, blue socks, and red and white sneakers. Her eye color is sometimes depicted as blue and other times as purple, depending on the artistic source.

Himeko possesses a wastefully energetic personality, always appearing to be in motion or high spirits. She is characterized as an airhead and a lovable doofus, whose antics are driven by a noticeable lack of a coherent train of thought. Her behavior frequently annoys her classmates, though her enthusiasm is presented as genuine rather than malicious. Her defining verbal tic is calling out "maho," a nonsensical catchphrase that carries no particular meaning but can, depending on her intonation, express her entire emotional range. Another of her common expressions is using the word "omega" as a prefix to declare that something is exceptionally cute or cool, such as saying "omega cute".

Himeko’s primary motivation appears to be the pursuit of fun and the expression of her boundless energy, which often manifests as pestering those around her. Her most significant relationship is with her teacher, the child prodigy Rebecca Miyamoto, known as Becky. Out of all the students in class 1-C, Himeko is by far Becky's biggest fan, a fact that brings her great joy but is a source of constant chagrin and annoyance for Becky herself. Himeko also has a well-documented obsession with crabs. She frequently expresses a love for them and possesses the ability to eat as much as she pleases without ever gaining weight, though her preference is specifically for imitation crab meat.

A unique and central aspect of Himeko's character is the source of her limitless energy; her cowlick is not merely a hairstyle but a mysterious, almost symbiotic organism that grants her vitality. This lock of hair is capable of moving on its own accord and is implied to possess intelligence that surpasses her own. A significant plot point in the anime involves a "mushroom incident" which causes her cowlick to shrink. To hide this change and maintain her energetic state, she begins wearing a replacement wig. In a recurring gag, if this wig is pulled off, Himeko immediately loses all of her energy and becomes listless, only to have her boundless energy restored the moment the wig is placed back on her head.

As one of the core members of class 1-C, Himeko plays a key role in driving the chaotic and comedic atmosphere of the story. Her interactions often serve as a catalyst for the show's absurd situations, particularly through her enthusiastic but misguided attempts to engage with her teacher. In the manga continuity, there is a development where Himeko voluntarily becomes a 'free agent' and is transferred to a different class, Class D, for a period. This highlights a degree of narrative flexibility for her character, though her core personality remains unchanged. Beyond her boundless stamina and peculiar dependency on her cowlick, Himeko has no special supernatural abilities, relying instead on her raw, untamed energy and her loud, cheerful disposition to make her presence felt.
