Description
Lucifer is a demon lord and the main antagonist of the second Dragon Ball film, Sleeping Princess in Devil's Castle. He resides in Devil's Castle, situated atop the Devil's Hand mountain range, and is at least five thousand years old, though his exact age is never confirmed. His goal is to plunge the world into eternal darkness and rule over an Earth populated by monsters and undead creatures.
In terms of personality, Lucifer is charming, cunning, and sophisticated, but also cold and ruthless. He presents himself as a gentleman, dressing formally in a suit with a bowtie and a large necklace, and he speaks with a polite demeanor. He is patient and methodical, having spent thousands of years slowly charging a massive jewel known as the Sleeping Princess by exposing it to moonlight during every full moon. Despite his ancient origins, he is modern in his approach, equipping his castle with computers, a television, and a giant laser cannon. He views sunlight as a nuisance and darkness as preferable, showing a deep contempt for the natural world that opposes his kind.
Lucifer's primary motivation is to destroy the sun. He plans to use the accumulated energy within the Sleeping Princess to power his laser cannon, firing it at the rising sun to snuff it out permanently. Once the world is cast into endless night, he intends to lead the planet's monstrous and undead inhabitants as their ruler. His plan also requires the blood of a young woman to complete the ritual, which he intends to extract from Bulma after luring her into his castle under the guise of hospitality.
In the story, Lucifer serves as the primary obstacle for Goku and Krillin, who are sent by Master Roshi to retrieve the Sleeping Princess as a test to become his students. He also interacts with Bulma, whom he charms and then reveals his true intentions to. He commands a loyal army of ogres and monsters, including the powerful crimson ogre Ghastel and a hunchbacked servant often referred to as the butler. His relationship with his minions is one of absolute authority. The arrival of Goku, Krillin, Yamcha, Bulma, Oolong, Puar, and Launch disrupts his plan on the night of its culmination.
Lucifer does not undergo significant development across the film, remaining a static antagonist whose defeat comes through a twist of fate rather than a change of heart. He is confident in his power and dismissive of his intruders, but he underestimates Goku's resourcefulness.
Notable abilities include a heightened level of physical power and speed, allowing him to dodge and deflect the attacks of a young Goku with little effort. He can generate and throw a scintillating scarlet sphere of energy as a combat technique. He also displays a vampiric appearance, with long fangs and the ability to shift his facial features to become more intimidating, including shrinking his irises to pinpoint pupils. He wears sunglasses to protect himself during daylight, suggesting a vulnerability to sunlight, though he is not destroyed by it directly. He also demonstrates the ability to charm and manipulate humans, as seen with Bulma. Ultimately, Lucifer meets his end when Goku's Kamehameha knocks the laser cannon off its foundation, causing the weapon to fire directly at him as he looks down the barrel, killing him instantly.
