Description
Nenji Nagihara is one of the main protagonists of the anime Nanaka 6/17. He is a seventeen-year-old high school student and the childhood friend and classmate of Nanaka Kirisato. At the beginning of the story, Nenji is portrayed as a delinquent who frequently gets into fights and shows little interest in his studies, often drawing criticism from the serious and academically driven Nanaka. His appearance reflects his rough nature: he has long, spiky black hair that leads other characters to refer to him as Wild Hair Nenji.
After Nanaka suffers a fall down a flight of stairs following an argument with him, she regresses to the mental state of a six-year-old girl. This event becomes a turning point in Nenji’s life. He agrees to Nanaka’s father’s request to keep the accident a secret and to watch over her at school. Nenji visibly matures, settling down considerably as he takes on the responsibility of caring for the child-minded Nanaka while trying to maintain the appearance that nothing has changed. He becomes more patient, protective, and emotionally open, though he still retains a blunt and sometimes abrasive manner.
Nenji’s primary motivation throughout the series is to help Nanaka recover her memories and adapt to her new situation. He struggles with guilt over his role in the accident and works hard to ensure her safety and well-being, often putting her needs ahead of his own. His development is marked by his growing awareness of others’ feelings and his ability to be a reliable caretaker.
Key relationships define Nenji’s role in the story. His bond with Nanaka is central; before the accident they were close but frequently argued, afterward he becomes her guardian and a stabilizing presence. He also develops a nuanced relationship with classmate Yuriko Amemiya, who accidentally learns Nanaka’s secret and later becomes a trusted confidante, showing signs of romantic interest toward Nenji. He has a rivalry with the delinquent Jinpachi Arashiyama, who often picks fights with him, but Nenji’s newfound maturity causes him to avoid pointless conflicts. Jinpachi’s younger sister Satsuki initially attacks Nenji but eventually comes to respect him. Nenji also attracts the affection of the kindergarten girl Kuriko Aratama after protecting her from bullies.
In terms of notable abilities, Nenji is a skilled and experienced fighter, a trait he developed during his time as a delinquent. His physical strength and combat prowess are displayed in his confrontations with Jinpachi and other troublemakers. He does not possess any supernatural powers; his strengths lie in his resilience, loyalty, and his capacity for personal growth.
Overall, Nenji Nagihara is a character who undergoes significant change from a reckless, immature fighter to a caring and responsible young man, anchored by his deep bond with Nanaka and his growing connections with those around him.
