Description
In the anime Ulysses 31, Circe is a powerful enchantress who resides on the planet Aim. She serves as the primary antagonist in the episode The Magic Spells of Circe, where she lures Ulysses and his crew into her domain through manipulation and magic.

Circe is driven by grand and defiant ambitions. Her primary motivation is to accumulate all the knowledge in the universe, which she intends to store within a giant tower she is constructing. Her ultimate goal is to use this immense knowledge to gain enough power to challenge and stand up to the gods of Olympus themselves. She sees other beings not as equals but as tools to achieve this end, turning humans she captures into zombified, pig-like slaves to serve as her workforce.

Upon encountering Ulysses, Circe recognizes him as the only man known to have successfully defied the gods. This recognition shifts her approach, and she proposes a bargain. She offers to free all her enslaved space travellers, including Ulysses' companions, and provide him with a map of all Olympus to aid in his own quest against the gods. In exchange for this valuable aid, Circe demands that Ulysses remain on Aim with her.

Throughout the episode, Circe demonstrates significant magical abilities. Her most notable power is transmutation, which she uses to transform the crew of the Odyssey and other space travellers into swine-like humanoids to serve as her slaves. She also possesses the power to manipulate others and control her domain. She has a librarian also named Hermes who serves her, though she ultimately destroys him when he tries to prevent her from giving the map of Olympus to Ulysses. Her actions put her in direct opposition to the gods, and after the destruction of her tower, she ascends a stairway to face their judgement.

Circe's key relationship in the story is with Ulysses, whom she views as a potential ally and the only being worthy of staying by her side because of his defiance of the gods. Her relationship with the gods is one of rebellion and ambition, seeking to acquire the power to no longer be subject to them. Within the narrative of the episode, her actions cause the companions to be transformed and then freed, and she provides a crucial element for the ongoing journey, the map of Olympus, though its fate is sealed when it is thrown from her tower.
