Description
Heratos is a recurring character from the 1980s anime Ulysses 31, appearing in the episode that bears his name as a central figure. He is an elderly scientist, archaeologist, and space explorer who lives a life of forced isolation on a desolate asteroid. His appearance is defined by a long beard, which he has grown during his years of suffering, and his most defining physical trait is his blindness.

Heratos was not always blind. His loss of sight was a direct punishment inflicted upon him by the Olympian gods for an act of defiance in his past. While exploring a wrecked Zotrian spaceship, he discovered a map of the gods' domain, the Olympus galaxy, and attempted to take it. As punishment for this transgression, the gods struck him blind with a flash of intense light. It was during this same expedition that he found and rescued a young Zotrian girl named Atina, whom he raised as his own daughter on their lonely asteroid home.

Heratos is tormented by the gods, who treat him as a plaything in their schemes. His primary motivation is the protection of Atina, for whom he harbors a deep paternal love. This love is exploited by the gods, who present him with a cruel ultimatum when Ulysses and his ship, the Odyssey, approach his world. They offer to restore his eyesight, but only if he agrees to lure Ulysses into a deadly trap. He is forced to provide a false map that leads not to the Kingdom of Hades, as he claims, but to the Graveyard of Wrecks and Hulks, a region of space from which no ship has ever returned. The gods make it clear that if Heratos refuses to cooperate, both he and Atina will be killed.

In the story, Heratos initially acts as a guide, albeit a treacherous one. He presents himself as a helpful old scholar offering assistance to Ulysses in his quest. However, his role is that of a reluctant antagonist, forced into betrayal by the gods' coercion. Key to his character is his relationship with Atina. She serves as his eyes and his assistant, and his love for her is the lever the gods use to control him.

Despite his compliance, Heratos is driven by a powerful conscience. His deception causes him immense remorse. After Ulysses and his crew depart for the false destination, Heratos confesses his lie to Atina. Overcoming his fear of the gods, he decides to risk everything to make amends. He and Atina follow Ulysses to the graveyard, arriving in time to warn him and help in the escape. This act of defiance against the divine command represents his key moment of development, as he moves from a position of fearful submission to one of courageous redemption.

Heratos possesses notable abilities as an omnidisciplinary scientist, with demonstrated expertise in fields like astronomy, archaeology, and paleontology. While his physical sight is gone, his moral conviction is reignited by his guilt, proving to be a more powerful guide than the sight the gods promised. He is a figure of tragedy and wisdom, whose encounter with Ulysses highlights the pervasive cruelty of the Olympian gods and the capacity for ordinary beings to choose the right path, even under duress.
