TV-Series
Description
John Balks is a significant antagonist in the series, known as the Eleventh Diary Owner. He is the middle-aged mayor of Sakurami City, a position he holds to wield considerable influence over the town and its institutions. His most important role, however, is not as a politician but as the creator of the Future Diary technology itself. He originally approached the god of time and space, Deus Ex Machina, with the proposal to grant humans a fraction of divine power through diaries that could predict the future, and he helped develop the prototypes that led to the final devices used in the survival game.
In terms of personality, Balks is a man of sharp contrasts. He presents himself as a polite, well-dressed gentleman, often appearing gentle and even shedding crocodile tears to manipulate those around him, such as when he convinced the city council to shut down an orphanage. Beneath this sophisticated exterior lies a ruthless, strategic, and highly intelligent individual. He is calculating and ensures that nearly every situation unfolds to his advantage, showing little mercy to the other diary owners, including the protagonist, Yukiteru Amano.
His primary motivation for creating the Future Diaries and participating in the survival game is rooted in a grand, eugenicist ideology. Balks aims to help humanity evolve into a superior race, drawing inspiration from historical empires like Macedonia, Rome, and Nazi Germany. To achieve this, his plan is to seize the power of the Eighth Diary Owner, Kamado Ueshita, and connect her Blog Diary to a supercomputer called Holon III. This would turn every citizen of Sakurami City into an Apprentice Diary owner, granting them predictive abilities and, in his view, advancing the human species. In this sense, he sees the survival game not just as a contest for godhood, but as a means to perfect mankind.
John Balks plays a pivotal role in the story's final arc. After the protagonist, Yukiteru Amano, discovers his true identity, Balks becomes the primary target of Yuki's revenge for the deaths of his parents. His role is that of a final, powerful obstacle for Yuki and his ally, Yuno Gasai. He forges a key relationship with the Eighth, Kamado Ueshita, manipulating and later allying with her to gain control of her diary's ability to create subordinate diaries. His other significant relationship, though adversarial, is with Yuki and Yuno, whom he constantly mocks and attempts to outmaneuver using his strategic genius.
Throughout his conflict with the protagonists, Balks displays notable cunning. His ultimate downfall comes from his overconfidence in his own security and his misjudgment of Yuno Gasai. He hides in a bank vault that he believes can only be opened by himself, the bank's former owners, or the "real" Yuno Gasai, whom he knows to be dead. When Yuno, who he believed to be an impostor, uses the retinal scanner to open the vault, he is confronted and killed by her, showing that his grand plans are ultimately undone by a single detail he had overlooked.
His most notable ability comes from his Future Diary, known as the Watcher Diary. Unlike other diaries that predict the future of a specific event or person, the Watcher Diary can read the future entries of every other Future Diary and their Apprentice Diaries in real time. This effectively makes it one of the most powerful diaries in the game, as it allows Balks to know the plans of all other participants. However, this diary has a critical weakness: it does not provide its own predictions of events. If the diaries it is monitoring contain false or misleading information, Balks can be tricked, and the Watcher Diary's entries become unreliable.
In an alternate timeline, Balks appears after the main story's conflict is resolved. Having learned of his failure and death from the future, he decides to cancel the Future Diary project entirely, thus preventing the survival game from ever occurring in that new world.
