Description
Hinata Hino is a student who befriends Yukiteru Amano after he transfers to Umesato Middle School, following an incident that forced the closure of his original school. She is a bright, cheerful, and outgoing girl with a tough, athletic demeanor, often identified by the bandage on her cheek and the nickname Hinata of Umesato. Her speech is marked by a Kansai dialect, which adds to her approachable and energetic personality. Beneath her friendly exterior, Hinata is a fundamentally rational and sensible person, often acting as a protective and supportive friend to those she trusts.
Hinata's motivations are deeply rooted in her troubled family life. She is the daughter of Karyuudo Tsukishima, the Tenth Diary Holder. Her parents are divorced, and she has spent years seeking the affection and validation of her father, who has historically shown more attention to his dogs than to her. This emotional neglect drives her initial actions in the story. She agrees to help her father in his goal to become God, believing his promise that he would use his power to rewind time and give their family a second chance to live happily together.
Her role in the narrative begins with apparent friendship but is soon revealed to be part of a calculated deception. She approaches Yukiteru to identify a potential diary holder, acting on her father's suspicions about Aru Akise. This betrayal sets up a significant confrontation where she uses her father's dogs and diary to corner Yukiteru and his allies. However, her role shifts dramatically when she is defeated and, instead of being killed, is shown compassion by Yukiteru, who insists on being her friend despite her betrayal. This act of kindness saves her and transforms her into a loyal and steadfast ally, leading her to actively help Yukiteru and his group in subsequent battles.
Hinata's key relationships are central to her character development. Her best friend is Mao Nonosaka, with whom she shares an exceptionally close bond; notably, she accepts Mao's romantic feelings for her without any apparent awkwardness, showing her open-minded and accepting nature. Her relationship with Yukiteru evolves significantly, from a target of deception to a genuine friendship based on mutual rescue and trust. She becomes fiercely protective of him. Her interactions with Yuno Gasai are defined by suspicion and danger; Yuno sees Hinata as a rival and threat, and Hinata eventually recognizes Yuno's lethal instability, having narrowly survived an attempt on her life. She also shares a cooperative relationship with the perceptive Aru Akise, working alongside him in later strategies to confront other diary holders.
In terms of abilities, Hinata initially wields her father's Breeder Diary. This future diary allows her to predict the movements of her father's attack dogs and their targets, effectively giving her command over a powerful pack of hounds. This ability has a weakness, as controlling too many dogs simultaneously becomes difficult to manage. After her father is eliminated from the survival game, Hinata later obtains her own Apprentice Diary known as the Friendship Diary. This diary predicts the future of her friends, which includes Yukiteru, Mao, Aru, and Ouji Kosaka. This diary pairs with Mao Nonosaka's diary, which specifically predicts Hinata's own future. Her physical attributes include being notably taller and more developed than many of her peers, a characteristic that is occasionally remarked upon.
Throughout the story, Hinata demonstrates significant personal growth, moving from a desperate, manipulated girl seeking paternal approval to a courageous individual who acts on her own principles of friendship and loyalty. She joins the fight to rescue Yukiteru from Yuno and later volunteers to help protect the Eighth, Kamado Ueshita, from other diary holders. Her journey ends in tragedy within the second world, where she is fatally shot by a manipulated Yukiteru. However, in the peaceful alternative timeline of the third world, she is seen living happily with her parents, who have reconciled, providing a wholesome conclusion to her arc.
