Description
Minene Uryu is the Ninth Diary holder in the deadly survival game orchestrated by the god of time and space, Deus Ex Machina. She carries the Escape Diary, a future-seeing journal that predicts the safest escape routes whenever she is in danger, making her extremely difficult to corner or capture. The diary has a limitation: it only functions when conditions offer a genuine chance of escape; if the odds are overwhelmingly against her, it will record a Dead End instead.
Her backstory is rooted in tragedy. When she was eight years old, she and her parents were caught in a crossfire during a religious conflict in the Middle East. Both of her parents were killed before her eyes. Minene placed the blame not on the human combatants but on the concept of God itself, and that fury transformed into a lifelong hatred of organized religion. She grew up alone on the streets, learning to steal and fight to survive, and by adulthood she had become a notorious international terrorist targeting religious institutions and figures. Her bombing campaigns were her personal crusade against any belief in a divine being.
Minene entered the Diary Game after a failed assassination attempt on a Catholic cardinal. While fleeing she was about to fall to her death, but Deus offered her a chance to survive if she joined the battle royale. She accepted, believing that winning the game would give her the power to eradicate religion from the world.
In terms of personality, Minene initially presents herself as cold, ruthless, and deeply cynical. She has no qualms about killing bystanders or fellow diary holders if it serves her goal. She plants bombs in crowded places and shows little visible remorse. However, beneath this hardened exterior lies a more complicated individual. She has a genuine soft spot for small children and animals, once caring for a family of chipmunks before releasing them. She also respects strength and directness, and as the story progresses she begins to form emotional bonds that challenge her lone-wolf mentality.
Her role in the story starts as a formidable antagonist. She clashes with the protagonist, Yukiteru Amano, and his obsessive ally Yuno Gasai, planting explosives at Yukiteru’s school and causing widespread destruction. During one confrontation, Yukiteru shoots out her left eye, permanently blinding it; she later wears an eyepatch and a glass eye. Despite this violence, she gradually evolves into an ally. After witnessing the true nature of the game and the manipulations of other players, she re-evaluates her motives. She becomes a big sister figure to Yukiteru, offering him guidance and protection. The two eventually hold no animosity toward each other, despite the harm they caused one another.
A key relationship is with police officer Masumi Nishijima. They first meet during her failed assassination attempt on the cardinal, where Nishijima is assigned to capture her. He repeatedly tries to get closer to her, and although she brushes him off, she eventually relents and falls in love with him. Their relationship becomes a central turning point in her development, drawing her away from pure vengeance and toward the possibility of a normal life. When Nishijima is killed by the Eleventh diary holder, Minene is devastated and seeks revenge, but later she chooses to help Yukiteru even after a brief betrayal, sacrificing herself in an explosion to open a vault. She survives because Deus had secretly transferred half of his power to her before the final battle.
Her notable abilities are not limited to the Escape Diary. She is a skilled demolitions expert, proficient with C4, grenades, dynamite, and improvised explosive devices. She creates a heart-rate-linked detonator that will trigger her bombs if she dies. She is also an expert infiltrator, able to disguise herself as a police officer or nurse. After receiving half of Deus’s power, she gains the ability to fly, travel between dimensions, and has enough divine energy to sustain her even after fatal injuries. A subplot reveals that her children, born later in the second world, inherit the ability to fly, indicating a genetic component to her godly powers.
Throughout the series, Minene undergoes significant development. She starts as a terrorist consumed by hatred for God, but through her friendships with Yukiteru and her love for Nishijima, she learns to trust others and to value life beyond her crusade. In the final timeline, the second-world Minene survives and lives happily with the third-world Nishijima, raising two sons. She maintains contact with Deus and his assistant Murumuru, having found peace after a life defined by violence.
