Description
Hans Humpty from the anime Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers is a highly enigmatic individual who serves as one of the chosen Six Braves, though his name is deliberately not well known for a very specific reason: he is an outstanding killer for hire. Unlike the other heroes, whose reputations precede them, Hans actively avoids fame, believing that recognition would only hinder his work as an assassin. His background before becoming a contract killer remains almost entirely a mystery, as he never reveals anything about his life prior to his professional career.

In terms of appearance, Hans has a lean build that belies his actual physical strength, with long, disheveled hair that often covers his eyes and simple, patched-up clothing. His most distinctive visual traits are his cat-like features, including a broad, feline smile and a tail that, while possibly attached to his clothing, appears capable of movement and aids in his balance. This resemblance to a cat is not merely superficial but extends deeply into his personality, mannerisms, and fighting style.

Hans Humpty's personality is as peculiar as his appearance suggests. He mimics the speech patterns and movements of cats, incorporating a mix of Tohoku dialect and cat-like speech in the original Japanese, doing so out of a deep-seated respect for the animals he modeled his techniques after. He possesses a morbid sense of humor, as demonstrated when he used a decapitated demon head for ventriloquism during a murder investigation, seemingly untroubled by the gore. Despite his eccentric and sometimes flirty demeanor, Hans is remarkably intelligent and is considered one of the sharpest and most perceptive members of the group. His keen mind makes him very difficult to deceive, as he is quick to notice contradictions and logical inconsistencies that others might overlook.

Hans approaches life and his mission with a hedonistic yet pragmatic philosophy. He claims to never kill without payment, strictly adhering to a business-like code where he expects compensation for his services, going so far as to demand money from a king before agreeing to confront the Demon God. When Mora Chester temporarily killed him during a confrontation, he forgave the act not out of mercy but because she compensated him financially. However, this mercenary attitude belies a deeper loyalty to the Braves' cause, as he is ultimately dedicated to defeating the Demon God for the sake of his own survival and humanity's continued existence. Unlike some of his more emotional allies, Hans can remain rational in extreme situations and is capable of setting aside personal grievances to focus on the mission.

His role in the story becomes central when a seventh hero appears among the chosen six, leading to a desperate search for the impostor. Initially, Hans suspects Adlet Mayer, the self-proclaimed strongest man in the world. It is Hans who, through the application of his assassin logic, becomes the first to confirm Adlet's innocence after a direct confrontation. During their fight, Hans used a technique to make Adlet believe he had been fatally wounded; by observing Adlet's eyes in what he believed were his final moments, Hans was able to determine that his target was not lying about his identity. From that point, Hans becomes one of Adlet's most crucial allies, working with him to uncover the true traitor.

Regarding his key relationships, Hans forms a surprisingly effective partnership with Adlet Mayer. Their dynamic begins with mutual suspicion but evolves into a strong camaraderie built on respect for each other's wits and combat abilities. Together, they are able to defeat Chamot, a feat no one had previously accomplished. Chamot, in turn, develops a strange affection for Hans, affectionately calling him Neko-san, or Cat-san. His relationship with Rolonia Manche is far more strained, as she is frightened by his profession and his immediate, persistent suspicion of her when she joins the group. Hans’s interactions with Mora are tepid and wary, built on a foundation of mutual distrust but grudging respect for each other's strength.

Hans's character develops from a solitary, untrusting mercenary into a more collaborative, if still eccentric, team player. While he remains independent and believes anyone can become an enemy at any time, his actions show a growing willingness to protect his allies and stand up for their innocence, as he did for Adlet against Mora. He is humble enough to admit his own miscalculations, such as apologizing to Adlet for turning the other Braves against him.

Notable abilities define Hans Humpty as an exceptionally dangerous combatant. He fences with an unworldly skill, wielding two wide-blade knives in a style he developed by imitating the movements of cats. This grants him an agility that is both inhuman and completely unpredictable; he can rotate in mid-air, walk on his fists, and display the flexibility and reflexes of a feline. His speed and silence make him a deadly melee opponent, capable of holding his own against the Demon God's commanders and even dodging lightning strikes. Perhaps his most unique skill is an illusory technique where he cuts an opponent in a specific way, creating a psychological deception that makes them believe they have suffered a fatal wound, which he then uses to read their true intentions at the "moment of death". Despite his lack of magical powers, his sharp intellect and deductive reasoning are arguably his greatest assets, making him a formidable strategist as well as a warrior.
