Description
Hime Utsumiya is the female lead of the anime Brain Powered. She is an 18-year-old girl who lost her parents at a young age and was subsequently raised in an orphanage called the Hidamari no Yakata, or Sunshine House. As the eldest among the children there, she naturally assumed the role of a caretaker, looking after the younger ones and acting as a mother figure to them.

Her personality is defined by a bright, pure, and caring nature that endears her to nearly everyone she meets. While she possesses a strong and emotionally stable core that grounds her, she can also be spirited and a little jealous, especially regarding matters of the heart. Her life changes dramatically when she comes into contact with a mysterious organic plate while scavenging with the other children. She witnesses the plate revive into a powerful, living mecha known as a Brain Powerd, which she later calls the Hime Brain. This event marks her first encounter with Yuu Isami, who had been sent to retrieve the newly awakened mecha.

From this point, Hime becomes a pilot of the Brain Powerd and joins the crew of the UN-affiliated battleship Novis Noah, dedicating herself to countering the plans of the Reclaimers, the organization seeking to revive the giant alien spacecraft Orphan. Despite her initial lack of formal training, Hime reveals herself to be a remarkably gifted pilot with exceptional innate senses. Her abilities grow rapidly through actual combat, allowing her to hold her own against elite enemy pilots. Her connection to her mecha is unique; she treats it as a living individual with its own personality, and in return, the Hime Brain and other Brain Powerds respond to her as a sort of shamanic presence.

Her relationship with the protagonist, Yuu Isami, is a central element of the story. It begins with conflict and mutual suspicion, as Yuu is initially her enemy, but this gradually evolves into a deep, romantic bond. Hime plays a crucial role as the emotional anchor for the more sensitive and troubled Yuu, and her unwavering perspective greatly influences him and the people around her. She also shares significant relationships with others aboard the Novis Noah, including the captain who recognized her talent, the pilots who trust her, and Yuu's own grandmother, whom she deeply admires.

Throughout the series, Hime develops from a simple orphan girl into the key figure capable of communicating with Orphan itself. She becomes the first human to truly understand the entity, realizing it is not a simple enemy to be destroyed but a living, lonely being. This empathic breakthrough provides the essential clue for resolving the central conflict of the series, as she gives Orphan an understanding of the meaning of life. Her notable abilities extend beyond piloting; she demonstrates a unique sensibility that allows her to grasp the essence of situations, including using her Brain Powerd to prevent a tsunami and deflect a nuclear missile.
