Description
Kotarō Hayama is a third-year student at Rakuzan High School and plays as a small forward, wearing the number seven jersey. He is recognized as one of the five Uncrowned Kings, a group of exceptionally talented players whose individual brilliance was overshadowed by the Generation of Miracles during their middle school years. His nickname is Raijū, meaning Thunder Beast, a title earned by his trademark lightning-quick dribble.

Hayama has short, messy blond hair and large, cat-like green eyes that give him an alert and mischievous expression. He is of average height and build but possesses remarkable agility and athleticism. A small snaggle tooth is visible on the right side of his mouth when he grins, adding to his childlike appearance.

His personality is energetic and often carefree, sometimes coming across as reckless. He enjoys showing off his dribbling skills and craves attention from both teammates and opponents. Despite this playful exterior, he becomes intensely focused and competitive when facing strong adversaries, displaying a genuine love for basketball. Hayama can also be surprisingly thoughtful in critical moments, showing a deeper side to his character.

Hayama's primary motivation is to test himself against powerful opponents. He thrives on the challenge of one-on-one situations and grows visibly excited when he encounters a player who can match his speed. He takes pride in his abilities and wants to prove that he belongs among the elite, even if he never achieved the same fame as the Generation of Miracles.

He makes his first appearance in the series when he nearly collides with Taiga Kagami on a staircase but acrobatically flips over him, demonstrating his extraordinary reflexes. As a starter for Rakuzan, he plays a crucial role in the Winter Cup tournament, serving as one of the team's primary scoring threats. In the final match against Seirin, he engages in a high-level duel with Kagami, showcasing his full offensive capabilities.

Hayama's most famous skill is his Lightning Dribble, a ferociously fast and powerful dribbling technique that produces a distinct rumbling sound when it strikes the floor. The ball moves so rapidly that it is nearly impossible for defenders to steal, allowing him to drive to the basket with ease. He combines this with exceptional jumping ability and acrobatic finishes, making him a consistent scorer in the paint. His physical speed and reflexes do not diminish as the game progresses; instead, he can increase his tempo and overwhelm defenders who cannot keep up.

He holds great respect for his captain, Akashi Seijūrō, and works seamlessly within Rakuzan's structured system. Among the Uncrowned Kings, he shares a bond with players like Eikichi Nebuya, and his spirited rivalry with Kagami pushes both players to elevate their game. He also develops a grudging respect for Seirin's teamwork during their intense match.

Throughout the Winter Cup, Hayama demonstrates personal growth by refusing to back down even when his initial attacks are countered. He channels his pride as a Rakuzan player to adapt and fight harder, ultimately forcing Seirin to exhaust significant effort to contain him. Although he does not undergo a major transformation, his determination in the face of fierce opposition reveals a maturity beneath his impulsive nature.
