Description
Beni Kinojō is a main character in the anime Ai Tenchi Muyo!. Her background is shrouded in mystery, but it is known that she originally comes from the planet Jurai, where she was held as a teenage prisoner for an unspecified crime. Her real name is Kurenai, and the nickname Beni was given to her by Princess Momo Kawanagare, a name that eventually stuck. Despite her status as a prisoner, her tenacious spirit impressed the Jurai royal family, who entrusted her with the most important duty of protecting their infant daughter, Princess Momo.
Beni and Momo were later sent on an unknown mission, but their journey was violently interrupted by a dangerous dimensional rift, an unintended consequence of an experiment by the scientist Washu. The resulting crash threw them through time and space, and they eventually arrived in the present day near Junai Academy, a girls' high school. Upon arriving, Beni joined the school's Science Club, not out of a love for science, but because of a persistent feeling that she had lost something important. She believed that the treasure the club was searching for might be the key to that missing piece of her past.
In terms of personality, Beni is taciturn, brave, and confident, presenting a tough and uncaring exterior. However, this facade hides a deeply caring nature. As a bodyguard, she was instantly charmed by the baby Momo, becoming a loving, loyal, and fierce protector. Her gruffness also masks a constant, underlying worry that her immense superhuman strength might cause her to unintentionally hurt someone she cares about. This strength is notable, rivaling or even surpassing that of the space pirate Ryoko Hakubi, much to Ryoko's annoyance.
Beni's primary role in the story is as the bodyguard for the two other members of the Science Club, Yuki Fuka and Rui Aoi, as well as her secret duty to protect Momo. She clashes frequently with Hachiko, the bodyguard of the Student Council, in a rivalry that highlights their respective inspirations from Japanese folklore; Beni is modeled after an oni, or ogre. Her key relationship is, of course, with Momo, to whom she is utterly devoted. She is also deeply suspicious of the protagonist, Tenchi Masaki, especially after she witnesses a glimpse of his hidden, true power during a battle and becomes aware that he is hiding his abilities.
Throughout the story, Beni experiences significant development. While she remains determined to find what she feels she has lost, her interactions with Tenchi and others force her to confront her situation. After Tenchi succeeds in reuniting her and Momo with their damaged ship, their presence from the present day is erased, and it is implied they settle on Earth hundreds of years in the past, at the location that will one day become the Masaki family shrine. Her most notable ability is her superhuman strength, which she wields with an iron kanabo, a traditional spiked club.
