Description
Crusty, whose real name in the original world is Haruaki Konoike, comes from a wealthy and prestigious family background, though he was born as an illegitimate child and faced a degree of estrangement from the main family. This complex family situation, including being constantly watched by his brothers and bearing the expectations of his grandfather, led him to immerse himself in the game Elder Tale as a form of escape and self-obscuration. He has a younger stepsister named Sayaka, who shares a similar demeanor to the noble Raynesia, and he once owned a cat, though after experiencing deaths in the new world, he has forgotten its name and appearance.

Personality-wise, Crusty presents a calm, intellectual, and inscrutable exterior that is well-suited for diplomacy and leadership. He is a natural leader capable of reading opponents and manipulating situations to his advantage, excelling in short-term tactical planning as opposed to Shiroe's long-term strategies. However, beneath this composed facade lies a mischievous, easily bored, and battle-hungry nature. His close associates are aware of his playful side and his tendency towards laziness when not engaged, with his second-in-command noting he would likely spend his free time lazing about, playing elaborate pranks, or mindlessly slaughtering monsters for fun. This duality is most evident in combat, where his calm demeanor vanishes entirely; he becomes a frenzy-driven berserker who fights with a murderous expression and a clear, almost joyous relish for battle that has earned him nicknames like the Berserker. His fighting style is notably reckless, as he discards the shield typical of his Guardian class to wield a massive two-handed axe, showing a disregard for his own safety that concerns his allies.

As the guild master of D.D.D., the largest combat guild in Akihabara, Crusty holds a central role in the power structure of the adventurer society following the Catastrophe. He serves as one of the primary representatives and the chairman of the Round Table Alliance, using his experience in social affairs to manage relations with the nobles of Eastal. His reputation as one of the only twenty players on the Japanese server with the experience to command Legion-class raids, which involve ninety-six participants, makes him an invaluable asset in large-scale conflicts. He maintains significant relationships with several key characters. He works closely with Shiroe and Michitaka as fellow representatives of the Round Table. The noble Raynesia sees through his public persona to the crafty and inhuman strategist beneath, playfully calling him a yokai or monster, and the two share a dynamic where they bond over their mutual disdain for tedious political affairs. He also has a noted rivalry with Isaac, the guild master of the Black Sword Knights, who is considered his equal among Guardians on the server.

The development of Crusty involves a significant shift from a central figure in Akiba to a separated traveler on another server. After the establishment of the Round Table, he is deployed as the supreme commander of an expeditionary force, but his boredom leads to him being caught up in a teleportation phenomenon caused by the manifested flavor text of a magical scythe belonging to his aide, Misa Takayama. This event transports him to the Chinese server, where he finds himself lost and afflicted with a powerful curse known as the Soul Dark Curse. This curse prevents his HP from recovering naturally and most importantly, steals and continuously erases his memories, including those of his friends and past in the Yamato server. While on the Chinese server, he encounters the adventurer Kanami and her party, eventually joining them in their travels. Through a battle with the fairy Paps, he manages to exploit a loophole in the contract of his curse, allowing him to regain his lost memories and gain some control over the curse's effects, altering it to allow him to siphon HP from the entity that cursed him. This arc provides deep insight into his mental processes and his reflections on his past life.

In terms of abilities, Crusty is a Guardian with the Berserker subclass, creating a unique high-risk, high-offense build. He wields a legendary two-handed axe called the Bloody Demon Ax, which boasts the highest attack power among confirmed equipment and has the ability to absorb the HP of enemies it strikes. He complements this with the Einherjar's Armor, a phantasmal-class ebony steel armor that greatly increases his strength and durability while reducing damage from giants and the undead. He also possesses a stone bracelet called Rage Again, which cancels the cooldown of his berserker skills and allows him to continue fighting in a frenzy for ten seconds even after taking a fatal blow. Beyond his equipment, Crusty has masterfully developed two Overskills. Hyperion Eye allows him to mentally visualize the status and positioning of his allies from a higher perspective, effectively removing the limitations of his viewpoint and making him a supremely capable raid commander. His other Overskill, Mnemosyne Taboo, is a dangerous ability that allows him to consume his own memories in exchange for substantial amounts of MP, cooldown resets, and increased attack and defense power, with the efficiency being high enough to overwhelm powerful Genius-class enemies by sacrificing trivial memories.
