Description
Nanako Usami is the main protagonist of the anime Locodol. She is a fifteen-year-old first-year student at Nagarekawa High School who becomes a local idol, or locodol, after being recruited by her uncle, Mitsugu Oota. She initially agrees to the job as a way to earn money to buy a new swimsuit, but she grows to take her role seriously. Nanako has shoulder-length brown hair with bangs falling on the right side and purple eyes, stands 158 centimeters tall, and is left-handed.

Her personality is characterized by a mix of timidity and level-headed practicality. She is prone to nervousness, especially when performing or speaking on stage, which often causes her to stutter and accidentally mispronounce her own name as Nanyako. Despite this, she is the most composed member of the group when it comes to everyday concerns, frequently worrying about practical matters such as her salary. She is hardworking, responsible, and deeply loyal to her friends and her community. Her initial reluctance and insecurity gradually give way to greater confidence as she gains experience and support from those around her.

Nanako's primary motivation shifts from earning extra money to a genuine desire to promote her hometown of Nagarekawa and, eventually, to aim for a national debut for her idol unit. She is the one who proposes setting a big goal for the group, showing her ambition despite her natural shyness. Her dedication is also tied to her family's financial difficulties, making her role as a locodol a meaningful way to contribute.

In the story, Nanako serves as the main viewpoint character and one half of the idol duo Nagarekawa Girls, alongside her upperclassman Yukari Kohinata. She often takes the initiative in problem-solving, such as devising a way to keep an outdoor performance going despite rainy weather. Her role expands as the group grows to include the mascot actor Yui Mikoze and later the substitute mascot Mirai Nazukari.

Her most significant relationship is with Yukari, a kind and elegant partner who supports her and helps her overcome her stage fright. Nanako also bonds with Yui, treating her with respect as a senior, and works to become closer with the shy Mirai by inviting her to karaoke. Her uncle acts as her initial connection to the locodol program, and she develops a friendly but slightly wary relationship with their enthusiastic manager, Saori Nishifukai.

Over the course of the series, Nanako develops from a nervous, uncertain girl into a more confident and capable performer. She learns to manage her nervous stutter and becomes more comfortable with public appearances. Her growth is driven by her friendships, her sense of responsibility, and her genuine affection for her town. Notable abilities include her level-headedness in practical matters, her creative ideas for handling performance challenges, and her steady improvement as a singer and dancer despite beginning with little experience.
