Description
Alois Trancy is a central character from the second season of the anime Black Butler. He is a fourteen-year-old boy with a slight build, standing about 160 centimeters tall, and has bright blonde hair and deep navy blue or icy blue eyes. As the head of the Trancy household, he holds the title of Earl and is known by the moniker "the Queen's Spider", reflecting his family’s role in performing underground tasks for the British crown.

Behind his noble title lies a deeply tragic past. Alois was not born into aristocracy; his real name is Jim Macken, a poor orphan who lived with his younger brother Luca and was despised by their village. In a moment of childhood despair, he wished for everyone in the village to die. This wish was inadvertently fulfilled through a contract Luca made with a demon named Hannah Anafeloz, which resulted in Luca’s soul being consumed. Following this, Alois was taken in by the previous Earl Trancy, who subjected him to physical and sexual abuse. It was during this period that his personality became severely twisted as a means of survival. He eventually gained the earl’s trust, took on the identity of Alois Trancy, and after the earl’s death inherited the title and estate.

Alois’s personality is volatile and contradictory, swinging wildly between childish glee, flamboyant charm, and explosive cruelty. This duality is described as a union of day and night. Underneath his erratic exterior is a profound fear of loneliness and darkness, stemming from the trauma of losing his brother and the subsequent abuse. He desperately craves warmth and attention, which manifests as an obsessive dependence on those he forms attachments with. Despite his manipulative and scheming nature, this need for affection makes him vulnerable and prone to emotional collapse.

The driving motivation for Alois is revenge for his brother’s death. He is manipulated by his butler, Claude Faustus, into believing that the demon Sebastian Michaelis destroyed his village and consumed Luca’s soul. His goal becomes to ruin Sebastian by targeting his master, Ciel Phantomhive. However, his deeper motivation is simply to no longer be alone and to find someone who truly loves him.

Alois’s most significant relationship is with his demon butler, Claude Faustus. He forms a contract with Claude, marked by a seal on his tongue, to achieve his revenge. He becomes slavishly dependent on Claude, viewing him as a protector and often begging him not to leave. Claude, however, is cold and manipulative, viewing Alois merely as a tool to obtain Ciel’s soul. This devotion ends in betrayal when Claude murders Alois to harvest his soul. Another key relationship is with the demon Hannah Anafeloz. Alois initially torments her cruelly, but later learns that she consumed Luca’s soul and that Luca now resides within her. In the end, Hannah offers him the genuine love he always sought.

Throughout the story, Alois experiences a tragic arc. After being killed by Claude, his soul is used to invade and share Ciel Phantomhive’s body. Upon learning the truth about his brother’s fate and finding acceptance with Hannah, he abandons his revenge. He forms a new contract with Hannah and chooses to be reunited with the memory of his brother; Hannah ultimately consumes his soul, allowing him to find peace.

Alois possesses no supernatural powers of his own. His contract with Claude binds the demon to his service. He is skilled in deception, manipulation, pickpocketing, and lying, abilities honed from his years as a street urchin and surviving in the Trancy household. As a noble, he is also proficient in dancing and opera, and his personal tastes include red wine and fish and chips.
