TV-Series
Description
Akame is a central figure in her narrative, known by the epithet Akame of the Demon Sword Murasame. Her story begins in a childhood marked by profound hardship, as she and her younger sister, Kurome, were sold by their parents to the Empire. Forced into a brutal training program designed to create elite assassins, the sisters were subjected to a deadly survival examination in a forest overrun with dangerous creatures. Out of one hundred children, only a handful survived, including Akame and Kurome, who were then separated to prevent them from depending on one another. Akame was selected to join a prestigious imperial assassination squad known as the Elite Seven, where she was trained for years in the arts of espionage and combat, becoming a highly effective killer.
Despite her success as an imperial assassin, Akame grew increasingly disillusioned with the government she served, witnessing its deep-seated corruption. Her turning point came when she was dispatched to assassinate General Najenda, a former imperial officer who had defected to lead a rebel assassination team called Night Raid. Instead of completing her mission, Akame was swayed by Najenda’s words and chose to defect, joining the rebels in their fight to overthrow the corrupt Empire. This decision created a deep and painful rift with her sister, Kurome, who remained loyal to the Empire, forging a tragic rivalry between them.
Akame’s personality is defined by a sharp contrast between her outward demeanor and her inner world. To most observers, she appears serious, cold, and unfeeling, a direct result of the hellish training and the many deaths she has witnessed. She is socially awkward and often struggles to express her emotions, leading others to mistakenly believe she is unaffected by loss. In truth, she cares deeply for her comrades and is haunted by the fear that they may not survive their next mission. When a friend like Sheele dies, Akame hides her grief, but this stoicism is a fragile shield. When Tatsumi once assumed she was simply used to the pain, she broke down in tears, asserting that losing a friend is the most horrible thing a person can experience and that she will never be fine with it.
This compassion, however, is reserved for her allies. When facing enemies, Akame shows no mercy. She approaches her targets with absolute resolve, often uttering words like eliminate and consign to steel herself for the act of killing. In a lighter vein, she has a well-known passion for food, particularly meat dishes from dangerous beasts and fish. She is a notorious glutton, and her love of cooking often puts her in charge of preparing meals for Night Raid. Her focus on food can be so intense that she becomes flustered if she burns a dish, a stark contrast to her usual cool composure.
Within the story, Akame serves as one of the strongest and most reliable members of Night Raid, often considered the team's trump card. She takes on a mentorship role for the protagonist, Tatsumi, training him in combat and the harsh realities of being an assassin. Her most significant relationship is with her sister, Kurome. Their bond is the source of immense tragedy, as both sisters love each other but believe they are fated to kill one another. Akame feels that the only way to save her sister from the Empire’s corruption is to end her life, leading to a series of emotionally devastating confrontations. Another pivotal relationship is with Najenda, the leader of Night Raid, whose ideals gave Akame a new purpose and a cause to fight for after years of serving as a tool of the Empire.
Akame’s development throughout the series is marked by a gradual, painful opening of her heart. She learns to rely on her new family in Night Raid and becomes more willing to show her vulnerability, moving from a solitary assassin to a true comrade. Her journey culminates in her facing her greatest enemies, including the powerful general Esdeath, where she must access the full potential of her abilities. As an assassin, her skills are nearly unrivaled. She is a master swordswoman with incredible speed, agility, and reflexes, capable of dispatching multiple enemies with ease and even holding her own against generals of the highest rank. Her fighting style is direct and lethal, specializing in quick strikes to vital points while suppressing her presence so effectively that her killing intent is undetectable.
Her signature weapon and primary source of her fearsome reputation is the Teigu (a powerful, ancient weapon) called One-Cut Killer: Murasame. This cursed katana carries a deadly poison that kills any living being with a simple flesh wound. Once the blade cuts the skin, a venomous curse spreads through the victim’s body, stopping their heart within seconds. However, this ability is ineffective against non-living targets, such as machines or reanimated corpses. Murasame also possesses a trump card known as Ennoodzuno. This ability, which only activates when the sword fully recognizes its wielder, drastically enhances Akame’s physical strength and speed for a short time. Activating it covers her body in dark, cursed markings that remain as painful scars afterward, a permanent reminder of the price of using such power.
