TV-Series
Description
Daidara is a secondary antagonist in the series, serving as a member of the Three Beasts, an elite unit of assassins and bodyguards directly under the command of General Esdeath, the Empire's strongest warrior. He is a man of immense size and physical power, with a thick-set build, long blond hair tied back, and blank white eyes. His appearance is further distinguished by a headband with horn-like protrusions, which adds to his bestial image, and he typically wears a black officer's uniform adorned with cross-shaped emblems. He is estimated to be in his thirties.
Little is documented about Daidara's life before joining the Empire's forces. What is known is that he was originally on a personal training journey, seeking to become the strongest warrior. During this journey, he encountered and challenged Esdeath, only to suffer a crushing and absolute defeat. Instead of resenting her, Daidara became utterly captivated by her overwhelming power, swearing his complete loyalty to her and willingly becoming one of her subordinates. This encounter and his subsequent training under Esdeath, which was brutal enough to kill most who attempted it, forged him into the powerful warrior encountered in the story.
Personality-wise, Daidara is characterized by an upbeat and enthusiastic demeanor, often seen with a smile. He is a straightforward and unsophisticated individual, preferring to leave strategic thinking to his leader Esdeath and his comrade Liver, while he focuses on carrying out his orders with zeal. His core motivation is a battle-centric desire to grow stronger, viewing combat through a lens reminiscent of a role-playing game. He constantly seeks out challenging opponents to gain "experience points" and "level up," believing that defeating any enemy, strong or weak, accumulates this experience on his path to becoming the ultimate warrior. Despite his brutality as an unrepentant killer, he displays a sliver of humanity that sets him apart from his fellow Beast, Nyau, as he is visibly disgusted by Nyau's hobby of carving off and collecting the faces of his victims.
In the story, Daidara serves as an obstacle for the protagonist group Night Raid. Alongside Liver and Nyau, he is first deployed to assassinate political rivals of the Prime Minister on a cruise ship. During this mission, he confronts the young Night Raid member Tatsumi. Using his immense strength, Daidara easily overwhelms Tatsumi, demonstrating the significant power gap between them. However, before he can land a fatal blow, he is intercepted by the more experienced Night Raid assassin, Bulat. In a stark display of differing power levels, Bulat effortlessly defeats Daidara, slicing him in half with a single, decisive blow from his spear, Incursio. His role in the narrative is therefore to showcase the threat level of the Three Beasts while also highlighting the superior combat ability of Night Raid's senior members.
Daidara's key relationships are defined by loyalty. His primary bond is with Esdeath, whom he follows with absolute devotion. He also works in tandem with the other two members of the Three Beasts, Liver, who is often seen as the leader of the trio, and the sadistic Nyau, though his relationship with the latter is strained by Nyau's disturbing habits.
Daidara's notable abilities are rooted in his tremendous physical strength, honed through Esdeath's lethal training. He is powerful enough to slaughter an entire squad of guards with a single swing of his weapon. This weapon is an Imperial Arm, a powerful relic known as the Double-Bladed Axe: Belvaac. This Teigu is so incredibly heavy that an ordinary person cannot even lift it, let alone wield it as a weapon, but Daidara's strength allows him to use it with devastating effect. The axe possesses two distinct abilities. Its primary function is as a colossal double-bladed axe capable of splitting groups of people or even a carriage in half with one blow. Its secondary ability allows it to be separated into two smaller axes which can be thrown at a target; once thrown, these axes will home in on and relentlessly pursue their target until they hit. Belvaac was originally one of several Teigus offered to Esdeath, who admired it but ultimately chose a different weapon, leaving it for Daidara to claim. After his death, Belvaac was recovered by the Revolutionary Army.
