Description
Calaveras is a fictional character from the anime and manga series Sailor Moon R, where she serves as a member of the Black Moon Clan and one of the Specter Sisters. As the second oldest among the four sisters, her name is derived from the mineral calaverite, and she is designed as a counterpart to the Sailor Guardian Sailor Venus. In the English-language adaptations of the anime, her name was changed to Avery.
In the original anime continuity, Calaveras is portrayed as a petty and somewhat lazy individual who takes pleasure in relentlessly teasing her sisters, particularly the eldest, Petz. She displays a reluctance to take on responsibilities herself and never willingly accepts a solo mission. Instead, she prefers to tag along on assignments given to her siblings, often following Petz in an attempt to claim credit for their work. This behavior highlights her opportunistic and self-serving nature, which is a key aspect of her personality throughout her appearances.
Calaveras's role in the story deepens during the final confrontation involving the Specter Sisters. She accompanies Petz on a mission that requires them to use a powerful, corrupting stick to eliminate the Sailor Guardians and their now-purified younger sisters, Koan and Berthier. During this mission, Calaveras urges Petz to attack their siblings, but the stick's corruption causes Petz to turn on Calaveras as well. Shocked by this betrayal and shown pity by Sailor Moon, Calaveras has a change of heart. She begins to understand human love and provides the Sailor Guardians with crucial information about the stick's power. When Rubeus creates a time vortex, Calaveras uses her whip to save Petz from falling in. Following the destruction of the corrupting stick, Calaveras willingly accepts purification, which transforms her into a normal human woman, signifying her redemption.
The manga presents a darker and more powerful version of Calaveras. She is the last of the Specter Sisters to appear and is given the mission "Code:004, Operation Re-birth". In this version, her primary ability is channeling, which she uses to act as a medium for the spirit of the Black Moon Clan member Rubeus in Tokyo. Her goal is to brainwash humanity into swearing allegiance to the Black Moon and destroying the Silver Crystal. In a direct confrontation, she uses her powers to channel the spirits of her deceased sisters and three captured Sailor Guardians through hypnotized civilians to attack Sailor Venus. Unlike her anime counterpart, this version of Calaveras does not experience redemption; she is destroyed by Sailor Moon's attack when she comes to rescue Sailor Venus.
Calaveras possesses several notable abilities that reflect her role as a dark reflection of Sailor Venus. Her primary weapon is a whip, which is identified in supplemental materials as the "Dark Love Whip," directly paralleling Venus's "Love-Me Chain" attack. Her most distinct power, particularly in the manga, is mediumship or channeling. This ability allows her to communicate with and summon the spirits of the dead, as well as control the minds of living humans. In the anime, she also demonstrates the power to create and command a monster, such as when she summoned the Droid Jamanen to assist her and Petz in battle.
