Description
Accelerator is the most powerful Level 5 esper in Academy City, recognizable by his pale skin, white hair, and crimson eyes. These features result from his ability blocking ultraviolet radiation, which also disrupts melanin production and contributes to an androgynous appearance. His power, vector manipulation, allows him to control the direction and magnitude of any force he touches. This ability operates both passively and actively: a subconscious reflection field automatically redirects harmful vectors such as bullets, heat, or electricity, while conscious use can manipulate wind, plasma, gravity, ground vibrations, or even biological processes like blood flow. Using this power requires immense real-time calculation, originally performed by his own brain. After a severe head injury, he lost much of his computational capacity and now relies on an electrode choker connected to the Misaka Network, which also forces him to use a crutch for mobility and limits his active power usage.
Isolated from childhood because his uncontrollable powers harmed others, Accelerator was placed in special classes and later trained by the scientist Kihara Amata, who shaped his ruthless mindset. He participated in the Level 6 Shift Project, an experiment that required him to kill twenty thousand cloned copies of the electromaster Mikoto Misaka, known as the Sisters. His stated goal was to achieve absolute power so that no one would ever challenge him again, a desire born from loneliness and the fear of hurting those close to him. The project ended after he was defeated by the seemingly powerless boy Touma Kamijou, whose ability negated his vector control. This defeat forced Accelerator to recognize the clones as living beings, triggering profound guilt.
After the experiment stopped, he encountered a small, injured clone named Last Order, who serves as the control tower of the Misaka Network. His decision to protect her marked the beginning of a transformation from a sadistic antagonist into a reluctant, morally ambiguous anti-hero. Though he self-identifies as a villain, his actions increasingly focus on safeguarding vulnerable individuals such as Last Order, Index, and Fremea Seivelun. He forms limited trust with allies like Yomikawa Aiho and Yoshikawa Kikyou, joins the covert organization GROUP, and eventually becomes Academy City’s Board Chairman, balancing ruthless pragmatism with a guarded sense of atonement. Under extreme stress, he manifests transformative wings that grant enhanced abilities such as flight and matter disintegration. His key relationships include a paternal bond with Last Order, an adversarial respect for Touma Kamijou, and a complex connection to the Sisters Network, which now supports his own survival. Despite his cynical, self-loathing exterior, his evolution is defined by guilt, obligation, and a refusal to let others repeat his mistakes.
