Description
Nobutaka Oda is a major antagonist and one of the most dangerous players in the survival game Btooom. He is a 22-year-old man of above-average height and a muscular, imposing build. He has slightly tanned skin, long wavy black hair that he brushes away from his eyes, a small stubby beard, and classic shades. A tribal tattoo reading AQUA ESCORPIÃO is visible on his left arm. He was once a club owner and an elite businessman in Tokyo, with blood type AB.

Oda was Ryota Sakamoto's best friend and frequent companion during high school. Their close relationship ended after a conflict involving a female classmate, an incident that left deep emotional scars and fostered a lasting animosity. His manipulative and emotionally abusive behavior in his personal life eventually led to his nomination for the real-life Btooom game. Unlike many players who are forced into the island against their will, Oda embraces the violence and strategy, viewing the game as a logical challenge and a battlefield of wits and power.

His personality is cold, calculating, and ruthless. He shows no compunction about killing and treats the game with a purely pragmatic mindset. He believes trust is a weakness and that survival requires cold logic and emotional detachment. He is a master of psychological warfare, often staying several steps ahead of opponents and manipulating others through intimidation or deception. Despite his cruel actions, glimpses of his past reveal a cynical worldview shaped by betrayal and disillusionment, hinting that his ideals were warped by experience rather than born from pure malice.

In the story, Oda quickly establishes himself as a formidable and feared participant. He is highly intelligent and athletic, using remote-control type BIMs (bombs) with precision to set strategic traps. His calm under pressure and tactical positioning make him one of the deadliest players on the island. He rarely speaks much, even to his occasional female accomplice, and holds most other players in contempt, seeing them as tools or obstacles to be eliminated. He does form temporary alliances of convenience but never truly trusts anyone.

The key relationship in his arc is with Ryota Sakamoto. Their shared past as friends turned bitter enemies fuels a deep-seated animosity. Oda views Ryota as naive and unsuited for the game's brutality, while Ryota must confront the emotional wounds of Oda's betrayal. Their ideological conflict—Ryota's desire to preserve humanity and trust versus Oda's embrace of cold efficiency—drives the series' psychological tension. Oda serves as a dark mirror to Ryota, representing what a top-tier player can become when they abandon their humanity.

His development throughout the series is subtle. While he remains a consistent antagonist, certain moments hint at regret and lost idealism, though he never fully abandons his ruthless pragmatism. His primary motivations are survival, a desire for control, and a need to prove his superiority in the ultimate test of strength and will. He is one of the few players who fully exploits the strategic potential of both BIMs and terrain, and his confrontations with Ryota become climactic tests of morality and power.
