Description
Haruka Ouma is a central figure in the narrative as the Senior Researcher of Sephirah Genomics, the stepmother of the protagonist Shu Ouma, and the sister of the primary antagonist Shuichiro Keido. Her life is deeply intertwined with the origins of the Apocalypse Virus and the "Lost Christmas" disaster, positioning her as a character caught between family loyalty and scientific responsibility.

In terms of background, Haruka was a brilliant student who graduated high school early and became the assistant to Kurosu Ouma, a leading researcher on the Apocalypse Virus. She admired him as a hero willing to sacrifice himself and eventually married him, becoming the stepmother to his children, Shu and Mana. On the day of the Lost Christmas outbreak, she was sent by a young Mana to retrieve Kurosu, but instead witnessed her brother, Shuichiro, murdering her husband. In the ensuing chaos, she chose to raise Shu alone, keeping the truth of his father's death a secret.

Haruka’s personality is defined by a sharp contrast between her professional and private lives. At work within the GHQ, she is depicted as serious, dedicated, and highly competent. However, at home, she adopts a very relaxed and almost playful demeanor, often wearing only her sleepwear regardless of company, and sharing a lighthearted bond with her stepson. Despite this casual exterior, her core motivation is a fierce, protective love for Shu. She believes her duty is to protect his future, even if it requires extreme or seemingly harsh measures to free him from the "fate of the king" associated with the Power of Kings.

Her role in the story is complex and evolves significantly. Initially a background figure watching Shu’s actions from within the GHQ, she becomes a pivotal player during the coup d'état. Believing that Shu’s Void Genome power will ultimately lead to his death, she reluctantly cooperates with her brother Shuichiro to remove it from him, even assisting in the resurrection of Gai Tsutsugami for this purpose. When her plan to destroy the reborn Mana fails, she is branded a traitor and goes on the run. Her flight triggers the final act of the series, as she takes the last remaining Void Genome, leading to a confrontation where Shu re-empowers himself to become the "messiah" figure.

Key relationships define her actions. Her marriage to Kurosu Ouma was short-lived, ending with his murder on the day of the Lost Christmas. Her relationship with Shu is the emotional core of her character; while she loves him dearly and sacrificed her freedom to raise him, her guilt over the secrets she keeps and her willingness to abandon him to save his life cause a rift that is only healed when he finally calls her "Mom" late in the series. The revelation that Shuichiro Keido is her older brother adds immense tragedy, forcing her to choose between saving her son and confronting a sibling who is a murderer.

Throughout the series, Haruka demonstrates notable abilities primarily in her scientific expertise. As a senior researcher, she is an expert on the Apocalypse Virus and the Void Genomes, which are the power sources of the story. In the latter half of the series, she operates the unmanned "Ghost" unit systems for the GHQ, showing her technical skill in military applications. Her development arc is one of atonement and decisive action. Moving from a passive scientist who covers up a dark past, she becomes an active fugitive who attempts to kill Mana to end the conflict and finally confronts her brother in a direct effort to stop the cycle of tragedy. In the novel version of the epilogue, her story concludes tragically as she is sentenced to life in prison for her role in developing the lethal Ghost system.
