Description
Kano Kirishima is a young girl who lives in a quiet coastal town with her older sister, Hijiri Kirishima, at the local medical clinic their family runs. She is a high school student, around sixteen or seventeen years old, easily recognizable by her short blue hair and green eyes. Her most distinctive feature is a bright yellow bandanna or ribbon tied permanently around her right wrist.

In personality, Kano is outgoing, energetic, and whimsical, often coming across as a bit strange or eccentric to those who meet her. She has a childlike and friendly demeanor, frequently greeting people with playful self-given titles and displaying a straightforward, naive curiosity about the world. She is an animal lover, serving as the animal caretaker at her school, and shares a particularly close bond with a stray dog she has named Potato, who follows her everywhere and seems to be her constant companion. She often claims to understand what Potato is saying and treats the dog as her best friend.

Kano's primary motivation stems from the loss of her mother, who died shortly after giving birth to her. Raised by Hijiri, she was told that her mother is now in the sky, watching over her. This belief creates a powerful and persistent dream within Kano: to one day fly up into the sky to meet her mother and apologize for being the cause of her death. This wish is closely tied to her yellow wristband, as Hijiri fabricated a story that if Kano kept the ribbon tied until she became an adult, it would grant her the magical ability to fly and use magic. Kano believes this story wholeheartedly.

Her role in the story begins when she encounters the protagonist, Yukito Kunisaki. After he befriends Potato, Kano becomes fascinated with him, and her sister Hijiri hires Yukito to work odd jobs around the clinic, integrating him into their household. As Yukito gets to know Kano, he learns about her dream of flying, which aligns with his own quest to find a girl in the sky, making him suspect she might be the one he is searching for. However, it becomes clear that Kano is suffering from a supernatural curse. She experiences strange episodes of sleepwalking, fainting, and muttering incomprehensible phrases, sometimes becoming violent.

The source of this affliction is a spiritual possession. When Kano was very young, she and Hijiri found a mysterious white feather in a local shrine. Upon touching it, Kano became possessed by the spirit of Shiraho, a sorrowful mother from a tragic past. Shiraho, driven to despair and unable to kill her own child to save it from a worse fate, had committed suicide. Her lingering anguish causes Kano to unconsciously reenact these final moments, leading her to attempt to strangle others or harm herself.

Key relationships define her journey. Her older sister Hijiri is her guardian, a dedicated doctor who has spent years trying to understand and cure Kano's strange illness. In a desperate attempt to prevent Kano from harming herself after discovering blood and a knife, Hijiri tied the yellow ribbon around her wrist and invented the story about magic, hoping the promise would serve as a psychological anchor. Yukito, as an outsider who becomes part of their home, plays a crucial role. He is present when the possession fully manifests, and by using the same white feather that caused the curse, he is able to help exorcise the spirit from Kano.

Kano's development culminates in a moment of profound emotional healing. After learning the truth about her sister's lie, she runs away in despair, removing the ribbon and attempting to "fly away" to her mother. During this crisis, the feather's power induces a vision in which she finally meets her mother's spirit. Instead of apologizing for her birth, as she had always intended, Kano is guided to express gratitude, thanking her mother for giving her life. This act of acceptance breaks the curse. Freed from the spirit's influence and the guilt that had driven her, Kano no longer needs her magical charm. She deliberately lets her yellow bandanna float away on the wind, symbolizing her recovered emotional stability and her readiness to live her own life.

While not possessing supernatural powers in her own right, her strong belief in magic is a core personal trait. Outside of the main story, in crossover fighting games, she is portrayed as having notable abilities that reflect her personality. She is depicted as a fighter who wields a staff and can use elemental magic, employing a long-range combat style that relies on keeping her opponents at a distance.
