Description
Itsuki Minami, almost universally called Ikki, is a fifteen-year-old boy who lives with the Noyamano family after the death of his parents. Before discovering Air Treks, the motorized inline skates that serve as the center of his world, he was the leader of a school gang known as the East Side Gunz. His introduction to the world of Air Trek comes through the Noyamano sisters, who are themselves elite riders. This event ignites an all-consuming passion within him, leading him to form his own team, Kogarasumaru, and set his sights on the Trophaeum, a massive tower that represents the ultimate challenge for any storm rider.
Ikki’s personality is a vibrant and often contradictory mix of traits that make him a classic example of a hidden badass. On the surface, he is upbeat, zany, and incredibly impulsive, frequently coming across as a perverted and immature lowlife who loves eating meat, a luxury he is often denied in the Noyamano household. He is a self-proclaimed genius who is very proud of his fighting abilities and never backs down from a challenge. However, this brash exterior conceals a much more complex interior. When the situation becomes truly serious, his personality can shift to a cold, steely, and intimidating demeanor, a rare occurrence that surprises even his friends. Despite his tendency to do foolish things, he possesses a surprising capacity for deep, philosophical thought and is a keen observer of small details that others miss. Most importantly, his apparent natural talent is supported by an immense and secret work ethic; he trains obsessively in a hidden area on a mountain, leaving the evidence of his hard work scarred into the environment.
His primary motivation is a simple, almost primal desire: to fly. From a young age, he was known as a "child of the wind," a boy who was "loved by the wind" and would climb any tall structure in a futile attempt to reach the sky. Air Treks become the tool that finally allows him to chase this dream. This desire is so powerful that it defines his every action. He is often oblivious to anything that does not directly involve Air Trek, such as the romantic affections of his childhood friend Ringo, because his mind is constantly occupied with mastering new techniques like the "Windmill Theory". He treats his ATs with a level of care and reverence that makes his adoptive sisters jealous, as they are not just equipment but the very means by which he touches the heavens. His role in the story is that of the protagonist and a candidate for the title of Sky King, a legendary figure among storm riders. He is the founder and emotional core of his team, Kogarasumaru, and his journey involves not only his own growth but also inspiring his teammates to reach their full potential.
Ikki’s most important relationships are deeply intertwined with his journey. He lives with the Noyamano sisters—Rika, Mikan, Ringo, and Ume—who are his surrogate family. Ringo Noyamano, in particular, holds deep feelings for him, though he remains famously oblivious for much of the story. His team, Kogarasumaru, is composed of his close friends: the timid but talented Kazu, the large and powerful Buccha, the Onigiri, and the dual-personality rider Agito/Akito. His relationship with Agito is especially significant, marked by a deep Ho Yay subtext and a powerful partnership in battle. Other key figures include the enigmatic Simca, who prophesies his destiny as the Sky King and sets major events in motion, and Kururu Sumeragi, his dedicated tuner who creates his ultimate equipment. His mentor, Sora Takeuchi, initially appears as a wise and powerful ally who trains him in the hospital, but his eventual betrayal is a crushing blow that leaves Ikki so devastated he briefly quits Air Trekking.
Throughout the series, Ikki undergoes significant development. He starts as a talented but raw delinquent and evolves into a true leader and a King. His journey is marked by profound highs and crushing lows. A pivotal moment is his recovery from the despair caused by Sora's betrayal, reignited by a posthumous message from his fallen comrade, Spitfire. He is proclaimed the Storm King of the Hurricane Road, a title unique to him, and eventually achieves his ultimate goal of defeating Sora to become the new Sky King. His personal growth is matched by his increasing power. He possesses special traits like "Hawk Eye" and "Trick Pass," which are considered necessary attributes for a Sky King. He can see the "Wing Road," a path of air invisible to most, and eventually learns to manipulate the wind itself. His notable techniques include the "Pile Tornado," where he creates a violent tornado with his kick, and the "Limited Express," which allows him to ride the inner walls of that tornado for a massive speed boost. His most powerful technique, "Null Wind," generates a massive circular storm that negates the tricks of all other Wing Road users. He first wields the Wind Regalia, but later receives the unique Storm Regalia from Kururu, a custom creation that is said to be equal in power to the legendary Sky Regalia itself.
