Description
Hideki Hinata is a central figure in the narrative of Angel Beats!, recognized as a co-founder of the Afterlife Battlefront alongside Yuri Nakamura. Before arriving in the afterlife, Hinata was a talented baseball player who played as a second baseman. His life was marked by profound disappointment when he failed to catch a crucial high fly ball during an important game, a mistake that cost his team a chance to advance to Koshien. This failure led him into a deep depression, during which he became involved with drugs offered by a senior and ultimately died after being hit by a truck while wandering in a drunken stupor. His backstory is explored more deeply in the prequel manga Angel Beats! Heaven's Door, where he serves as the main protagonist.
Hinata possesses a bright, cheerful, and dependable personality, often acting as the mood maker for the group. He is consistently kind and helpful, particularly towards newcomers like Yuzuru Otonashi, whom he quickly befriends and guides as a reliable ally. Despite his easygoing and sometimes comical demeanor, he is a deeply loyal and protective individual who is willing to put himself in harm's way for his comrades. He frequently engages in daily, petty arguments and physical comedy with the energetic Yui, but this banter masks a genuine care and concern for her well-being.
His primary motivation in the afterlife shifts from fighting against God and the Angel, Kanade Tachibana, to helping his friends come to terms with their pasts and move on. His role in the battlefront is that of a steady, reliable force and a key strategist in their operations. One of his most defining moments occurs when he helps Yui fulfill her final wish. After aiding her in completing a list of dreams, he confesses that he would marry her, regardless of the physical disabilities she had in life. He visualizes a future where they meet by chance when his baseball breaks her window, declaring that even against odds of one in six billion, he would fall in love with her and choose to marry her again. This heartfelt act allows Yui to find peace and disappear.
Hinata shares several key relationships. He is the closest friend to the protagonist, Otonashi, and serves as a crucial source of support and information for him. He co-founded the battlefront with Yuri Nakamura, whom he affectionately nicknames Yurippe because her given name is the same as his mother's, which he finds uncomfortable to use. Despite Yuri often using him as a testing dummy or subjecting him to comedic abuse, he is fiercely loyal to her and has been by her side longer than almost anyone else. His most significant emotional development is his relationship with Yui, evolving from constant bickering to a profound confession that helps her resolve her regrets. Another notable ability is his talent for giving others nicknames, such as Yurippe and Shiina-chi.
Throughout the series, Hinata demonstrates notable development. He begins as a character haunted by a single, devastating regret from his past life, but through his experiences and bonds formed in the afterlife, he learns to confront these feelings and use them to empathize with and save others. His growth culminates in his willingness to make a sincere, life-changing promise to Yui, showing he has moved beyond his own pain to bring happiness to someone else. In combat, Hinata is a skilled fighter, often wielding a RPK-74 light machine gun as his primary weapon, though he also uses a S&W 645 pistol and has been seen with an M14 DMR sniper rifle. In the prequel manga, he is also shown using a spear. After a graduation ceremony with his remaining comrades, Hinata is one of the last to disappear from the afterlife, sharing a final, meaningful moment and a fist-bump with Otonashi before fading away.
