Description
Cassandra Jill Warlock, often referred to simply as Cassa, is a central figure in the conflict at the heart of the narrative. Known by the epithet the Black Serpent, she is an Old Blood vampire with a lineage that traces back to the witch Morgan. In her human life, she was a gypsy and a magician of considerable talent. She is recognized as the eldest daughter of the Warlock family, a prestigious vampire house, but her existence is considered irregular. She is a half-blood, created through a deliberate mixing of bloodlines intended to produce a powerful combat-oriented doll. However, because her own spirit did not break and she possessed no inherent loyalty, she was deemed a failure by her family and was despised by vampire society, which places immense value on pure bloodlines and heritage.

Despite this rejection, Cassandra is an exceptionally competent individual with a defiant and stubborn personality. She is known for her intense determination and her refusal to accept the authority of the established vampire political system and the prejudices of the nobility. Over the centuries, she was shunned for her secluded nature and her unconventional worldviews, but she never abandoned her ideas. As a leader of the Kowloon Children, she sheds her aloof and distant exterior to become fiercely protective, trustworthy, and remarkably charismatic, often regarded as a big sister figure by her comrades due to her wisdom and reliable presence. She can also be cunning, manipulative, and theatrical when the situation demands it, but her core motivation is not simple malice. Her actions are driven by a deep-seated desire to ensure the continuation of her bloodline, a goal she believes is worth any sacrifice.

Her role in the story is primarily that of an antagonist and the de facto commander of the Kowloon Children. She was the first to be bitten by the founder of the Kowloon bloodline, an act that branded her a traitor in the eyes of other vampires. She was once a friend and traveling companion to Jiro Mochizuki and Alice Eve. Initially, she hated Jiro for what she saw as him stealing Alice away from her. In contrast, she loved Alice deeply, as Alice treated her without the discrimination she faced from others. A pivotal and tragic event in her past is the killing of Alice, though Jiro later questions why she would then guard Alice’s ashes. After this, she leads the Kowloon Children in a major incursion into the Special Zone, using a gap in the barrier to enter and launching an attack that allows her ally Zaza to claim the body of Sei. She is a key figure in the subsequent battle for the Special Zone.

Cassandra maintains several key relationships that define her. Her bond with Jiro is complex, evolving from hatred to a more nuanced connection. Despite their enmity, it was she who taught Jiro much about the strength of a vampire, and she eventually comes to harbor genuine affection for him as well. Her happiest memories were of her time with Alice and Jiro. Her relationship with her family is characterized by disdain and rejection, which has fueled her rebellion. As the leader of the Kowloon Children, she acts as a mentor and protector to members like Zaza and the Kowloon King, Adam Wong. It is revealed that Liz Snake, the Queen of Kowloon, is her granddaughter, and she played a direct role in creating Adam Wong as the Kowloon King by passing on the contents of her long life and memories to him, essentially forming another version of herself within him.

Over the course of the narrative, Cassandra’s character shows notable development. While she remains committed to her goals, her personal feelings and regrets come to the forefront. Her sacrifice and the care she shows for her subordinates reveal a deep sense of loyalty and a desire for connection that transcends her objective of bloodline survival. She eventually acknowledges that she and her last remaining comrade will likely die together. In a final act of acceptance and perhaps affection, she sends her ally away and seeks out Jiro for a final confrontation. She dies contentedly in Jiro’s arms, choosing to end her long life on her own terms.

In terms of abilities, Cassandra is a remarkably powerful vampire, capable of matching a fully empowered Jiro in combat even without having fed for months. She possesses all standard vampire attributes, including enhanced strength, speed, durability, and senses. Among her more notable powers is shapeshifting, and she is one of the few vampires who can survive being impaled by a silver blade. She has mastered the use of a silver chain as both a weapon and a tool, and she is also a skilled swordswoman. Her magical aptitude is exceptional, allowing her to employ a variety of spells. She wields the Hide Hand ability, which allows her to manipulate objects and create invisible barriers capable of stopping bullets. She also possesses the Eye Raid ability, allowing her to control minds through eye contact, search memories, or induce hypnosis on multiple targets at once. Furthermore, the Kowloon Children she commands are under her control, and she can directly appear and disappear at will, demonstrating a mastery over her vampiric and magical abilities that makes her a formidable and dangerous opponent.
