Description
Mikoto Minagi, known simply as Mikoto in the series My-Otome, is a character whose origins are shrouded in mystery. She is a young girl with very short black hair, often tied into small braids, and yellow eyes. Her backstory begins when she was pulled from the sea by a passing ferry, having no clear memory of her past. Her primary motivation throughout the story is to search for her brother, a goal that drives her actions and brings her into the world of the Otome.

In terms of personality, Mikoto exhibits a distinctly feral and naive nature. She behaves as though she was raised by cats, frequently running on all fours, displaying poor grammar and table manners, and often acting on pure instinct. This cat-like demeanor is so pronounced that she is referred to as the Cat Goddess within the narrative of My-Otome. Despite her wild exterior, she is fiercely loyal and protective of those she cares about, forming a deep, almost dependent attachment to Mai Tokiha, who becomes her closest friend and roommate. Her love for Mai is a central emotional anchor, and she is rarely seen far from Mai's side.

Within the story of My-Otome, Mikoto serves as a supporting character, continuing her bond with Mai. Her role is often that of a curious and unpredictable presence, sometimes acting as a source of comic relief due to her animalistic antics, but also as a powerful ally in times of conflict. She retains her catlike curiosity but is described as being generally more malevolent in the My-Otome manga, capable of switching between human and cat forms at will. This darker streak contrasts with her more innocent portrayal in the parallel series My-HiME.

Mikoto’s abilities are formidable and tied to her unique nature. She is physically very strong and agile, often moving with cat-like speed and reflexes. Her signature weapon is a large jet-black claymore named Miroku, which responds to her call even when not in her hands. Miroku can cut through almost any object and can summon powerful energy blasts that manifest with glowing red eye-shaped markings on the blade. In My-Otome, her Child, also named Miroku, is a monstrous, ogre-like creature wielding a gigantic spiked club, though it is often under the control of the Obsidian Lord rather than Mikoto herself. This connection to the Obsidian Lord ties her to larger conflicts and reveals her deeper, often tragic, role in the unfolding events.

Throughout the series, Mikoto experiences meaningful development. Initially driven solely by her search for her brother and her attachment to Mai, she gradually learns to trust others beyond her immediate circle. Her friendships, particularly with Mai, help her open up emotionally. She evolves from a near-feral, emotionally scarred girl—scarred by abandonment and the loss of a maternal figure—into someone capable of forming bonds and fighting not just for her own goals but for the protection of her friends. This growth highlights her journey from a wild, solitary existence to a more integrated and loyal member of the community, even as she retains her distinctive cat-like traits.
