Lirin is a young energetic youkai princess and the daughter of the Ox-King Gyumaoh and his mistress Gyokumen Koushu. She is the younger half-sister of Kougaiji, whom she deeply admires and trusts unconditionally. Her personality is strikingly similar to that of Son Goku: cheerful, happy-go-lucky, perpetually hungry, and fond of fighting, yet also extremely friendly and naive. Despite her youth, she is a capable warrior. She holds a crush on the monk Genjo Sanzo, often seeking out his company, which leads to frequent bickering with Goku. Her older half-brother Kougaiji cherishes her even though she is a constant reminder of their father’s infidelity, and the loyal retainers Dokugakuji and Yaone serve as her caretakers, often struggling to keep her out of trouble as she tends to wander off on her own. In the story, Lirin initially aligns with her mother Gyokumen Koushou’s schemes to revive Gyumao, but her primary motivation is her devotion to Kougaiji. She is willing to put herself in danger for his sake, as seen when she confronts Sanzo directly. Over the course of the series, she remains a supporting figure on the opposing side, interacting with the main group in a mix of combat and playful rivalry.
