Description
Makarov Dreyar serves as the third, sixth, and eighth guild master of the Fairy Tail guild and holds the distinguished rank of one of the Ten Wizard Saints. He is the son of Yuri Dreyar, one of the guild's founders, and was given his name by the first master, Mavis Vermilion, who became his godmother after his mother passed away shortly after his birth. At the age of forty, he succeeded Precht Gaebolg as master and has led the guild for decades, overseeing its growth into one of the most powerful and renowned magical guilds in the land.
In terms of appearance, Makarov is an extremely short and elderly man with a bald crown, a thick white mustache, and black eyes. He typically wears a white shirt bearing the guild's emblem on his chest, covered by a long coat that sometimes displays the insignia of the Ten Wizard Saints. On more casual occasions, he has been seen in an orange hoodie with a matching striped jester hat. In later years, following the guild's disbandment and subsequent events, he grows a full white beard and eventually requires the use of a wheelchair.
Makarov’s personality is defined by his deep, paternal love for every member of his guild, whom he regards as his own children. He is generally温和 and approachable, but any harm done to his members awakens a terrifying rage, and he will seek vengeance without hesitation, as demonstrated when he declared war on the Phantom Lord guild after they injured three of his wizards. He holds the Magic Council in contempt, believing that rules and regulations stifle the growth and freedom of a wizard’s magic. Despite his wisdom and calm demeanor, he has an eccentric and occasionally perverted side, once spanking Lucy Heartfilia as a form of punishment and showing delight in having beautiful women in the guild. In his younger years, he was known to be impatient and quick to pick fights, traits that can still be seen reflected in his younger guild members.
His primary motivation is the protection and prosperity of Fairy Tail and its members. He believes that a guild is more than an institution; it is a family, and he prioritizes the safety and happiness of his children above all else, including his own blood relatives. He expelled his own son, Ivan Dreyar, for posing a threat to the guild, and his relationship with his grandson, Laxus Dreyar, was strained for many years as a result. However, after Laxus’s rebellion against the guild was resolved, the two reconciled, and Laxus began addressing him as grandfather.
Within the story, Makarov serves as the guiding patriarch and central authority of Fairy Tail. He provides counsel, issues missions, and often has to answer for the massive property damage caused by wizards like Natsu Dragneel and Gray Fullbuster. His leadership is central to nearly every major conflict. During the war against Phantom Lord, he defeated the rival guild master Jose Porla with the legendary spell Fairy Law. On Tenrou Island, he fought against the former master Hades and later sacrificed himself to protect his children from the Black Dragon Acnologia, leading to the guild’s disappearance for seven years. In the war against the Alvarez Empire, he pushed his body beyond its limits to protect his family, ultimately using Fairy Law on a massive scale and paying a heavy physical price. He also briefly disbanded the guild to shield its members from persecution, demonstrating that he would destroy the institution he loves to save the people within it.
Makarov commands a vast and versatile array of magical abilities. His signature magic is Giant, which allows him to enlarge his body, or specific parts of it, to gigantic proportions. At its maximum, this magic transforms him into a titan the size of an island, granting him immense physical strength and durability, as shown when he stopped Acnologia’s charge with his bare hands. He is also a master of the Fairy Tail’s three great magics, including Fairy Law, a powerful light-based judgment spell that inflicts damage only on those he perceives as enemies. In addition, he is proficient in numerous elemental magics, including fire, ice, wind, and light, as well as defensive spells such as the Three Pillar Gods, which he used to shield himself from Hades’s attacks. His skills also extend to telepathy, sensory abilities, and dispelling magic. Throughout his long life, Makarov remains the unwavering heart of Fairy Tail, a small man who stands as a giant in his unwavering commitment to his family.
