Description
Dita Liebely is a central figure in the narrative of Vandread: The Second Stage, serving as the female protagonist whose journey is deeply intertwined with the series' core themes of connection and understanding. She is a young woman of sixteen years with a distinctive appearance, characterized by her long red hair and blue eyes, and she stands 158 centimeters tall. Her typical attire consists of a black crop top, a white jacket, a white skirt with pink linings, and matching boots. As an apprentice pilot from the all-female planet of Mejere, she operates a blue Dread, a type of fighter spacecraft.

Her personality is overwhelmingly cheerful, bubbly, and naive, a demeanor she maintains in almost every situation, including combat. Rather than being a sign of ignorance, this persistent optimism is a deliberate coping mechanism developed from her past. When her home unit on Mejere was shut down, causing widespread sadness, she learned to use humor and silly antics to cheer people up, a habit that left her unsure how to act in truly sorrowful moments. Her outlook is also heavily influenced by a childhood fantasy in which aliens would one day arrive to take her away from her bleak world to a land of happiness. This fantasy fuels her defining fascination with aliens and otherworldly beings. She refers to all enemies as "bad aliens," but her fascination takes a positive and personal turn when she meets Hibiki Tokai, a male from the planet Taraak. Believing him to be the alien from her dreams, she immediately takes to calling him "Mr. Alien," while he, in turn, dubs her "UFO Girl".

Dita's primary motivation throughout The Second Stage is twofold. On a personal level, she is driven by her deep and straightforward affection for Hibiki, which she has harbored since their first encounter. Her feelings are pure and unwavering, despite drawing ridicule from some of her female crewmates who were raised to see males as a hostile, alien species. On a broader level, she is motivated to protect her comrades and homeworld. Her role in the story is critical, as her Dread is one of three that were exposed to a mysterious light, granting it the unique ability to merge with Hibiki's Vanguard mecha. This combination creates the Vandread Dita-type, also known as the Blue Kachina, which translates to "life bringer." This blue humanoid mecha embodies offensive combat and is equipped with powerful dual energy cannons that can be configured for long-range bombardment, close-quarters lances, or combined into a mighty javelin.

Key relationships shape her character, most significantly her bond with Hibiki, which evolves from a one-sided fascination into a genuine, mutual partnership. While other crew members like the stern Meia Gisborn and the flamboyant Jura Basil Elden are important to the team, Dita maintains a friendly demeanor toward everyone, including those like Barnette Orangello who show her contempt. Despite her childish and carefree nature, Dita demonstrates notable development by The Second Stage. Her combat abilities grow substantially, allowing her to rise to a co-leading rank among the pilots, just under Jura and Barnette. More significantly, her character matures as she learns to cope with more complex emotions, such as depression, during the series' heavier events. This growth culminates in a symbolic moment of understanding and mutual respect when she finally calls Hibiki by his real name instead of her playful nickname. Beyond her piloting skills, Dita possesses the surprising and nurturing ability to cook, finding great satisfaction in preparing meals for Hibiki.
