Description
Himawari Kunogi is a high school classmate of the protagonist, Kimihiro Watanuki, and serves as his primary love interest. She is a young girl with a bright, cheerful, and friendly demeanor, almost always seen wearing a smile. Her outward personality is that of a kind and relaxed individual who often playfully teases Watanuki and his classmate Shizuka Doumeki, frequently commenting on how well they get along despite their constant bickering. While she appears somewhat naive and oblivious to Watanuki's obvious feelings for her, she is in fact quite mature and perceptive, having been aware of his affection from early on.

The central and defining aspect of Himawari’s character is that she is a normal human who involuntarily brings misfortune and bad luck to everyone around her, with the exception of her parents. This is not a curse in the traditional sense but rather an innate and passive ability. Since childhood, people connected to her have been harmed or have met with tragic fates, including friends and even a teacher. Because of this, she lives with a profound sense of guilt and isolation. Her cheerful personality is largely a facade to hide her deep-seated fear of hurting those she cares about. For instance, she never cooks for her friends, giving the excuse that she is bad at it, but in reality, she does so to avoid the risk of her bad luck being carried through her cooking. She frequently declines Watanuki’s invitations to spend time alone, not out of disinterest, but to protect him from being near her.

Her role in the story is that of Watanuki’s unattainable ideal, as well as a source of great peril and profound emotional growth for him. Initially, Watanuki believes her to be his "goddess of good luck," but the witch Yūko Ichihara cryptically warns him otherwise. Himawari’s presence often foreshadows or catalyzes unfortunate supernatural events, and she is sometimes present when disasters occur. Her hidden nature is fully revealed after a pivotal incident where her bad luck causes Watanuki to fall from a second-story window, nearly killing him. To save his life, she goes to Yūko’s shop and pays a tremendous price: she permanently takes on all the physical scars from Watanuki’s accident onto her own back. Following this, she resolves to cut all ties with Watanuki to protect him from further harm.

However, Watanuki refuses her attempts to leave, confessing that being with her makes him truly happy, regardless of the danger. This acceptance is a transformative moment for Himawari, as it is the first time someone has told her they are happy to be in her presence. She reluctantly agrees to remain friends, and in a show of emotional vulnerability, she cries with relief and joy. To hide the scars she now bears on her back from Watanuki, she changes her hairstyle, letting her long hair down instead of tying it in her signature pigtails.

Her key relationships are central to the narrative. With Watanuki, she shares a deep, caring, and complicated bond. She cares for him deeply but is terrified of harming him, while he provides her with unconditional acceptance. Watanuki later gives her a small, magical bird named Tanpopo, which is immune to her bad luck, as a symbol of their lasting friendship. With Shizuka Doumeki, she shares a more relaxed friendship. Doumeki is one of the few people immune to her misfortune due to his strong spiritual powers, and he often acts as a buffer when she is around Watanuki, as his pure aura helps to negate her bad luck. The witch Yūko is also fascinated by her, treating her with curiosity and kindness, and never blaming her for her inherent nature.

Throughout the story, Himawari’s primary motivation is to protect others from herself, a burden she carries with a quiet, forced smile. Her development involves moving from a place of self-imposed isolation and guilt to a tentative acceptance of friendship and love, learning that she can be happy even with her unfortunate nature. In later storylines, after Watanuki becomes the permanent owner of Yūko's shop and can no longer leave it, their relationship becomes long-distance. Years later, Himawari marries a man who accepts her friendship with Watanuki, but due to her bad luck and the nature of the shop, she is only able to visit Watanuki once a year, on his birthday.
