Description
Miyabi Kagurazaki is a supporting character in the anime Ai Yori Aoshi ~Enishi~. She serves as the appointed guardian and lifelong caretaker of Aoi Sakuraba, having been raised in the Sakuraba household after her parents, who worked for the Sakuraba family, died in an accident. Aoi’s mother took in the orphaned Miyabi and tasked her with caring for Aoi, a duty Miyabi has carried out with unwavering devotion ever since. As an adult, she is also heavily involved in the management of the Sakuraba Department Store and later becomes the strict manager of the Sakuraba summer house, where most of the story takes place.

Miyabi’s personality is outwardly stern, no-nonsense, and exacting. She enforces the rules of the summer house with a firm hand and often appears as a tough-as-nails workaholic who prioritizes order and propriety. She initially dislikes Kaoru Hanabishi and his friends, viewing them as disruptive to Aoi’s life, and she is very strict about upholding the Sakuraba family’s honor. However, beneath this harsh exterior lies a deeply compassionate and kind-hearted person. This gentleness shows in moments of crisis—for example, when the pet ferret Uzume is nearly crushed by a large heirloom pendulum clock, Miyabi immediately races to find a crowbar and frees the animal, despite her earlier aversion to it. Aoi later explains that the ferret could sense the kindness within Miyabi’s samurai-like demeanor. Similarly, she is humbled in a comic scene when she loses a drinking game against the American character Tina Foster, revealing a more vulnerable and human side.

Miyabi’s primary motivation is to protect and serve Aoi, whom she deeply respects. She addresses Aoi with the honorific “-sama” and later, after accepting Kaoru, adds “-dono” to his name, showing a formal but growing regard for him. Over the course of the series, her attitude toward Kaoru shifts from outright disapproval to grudging acceptance, driven by the genuine love she sees between Aoi and Kaoru. This development marks her transition from an antagonist-like enforcer to a supportive, if still strict, mentor figure. She is very intelligent and once provided home schooling lessons to Aoi, and her given name, meaning “refinement,” reflects her role in training Aoi to become a proper wife.

In terms of notable abilities, Miyabi is a skilled business manager and organizer, ensuring the smooth operation of both the department store and the summer house. She is also physically active, enjoying summer traditions such as breaking watermelons. Her strongest trait, however, is her resolute sense of duty and the quiet compassion that eventually wins over those around her, making her an integral part of the Sakuraba household’s dynamic.
