Description
Aster Phoenix, known as Edo Phoenix in the original Japanese version, is a child prodigy and world-famous professional duelist who first appears during the second season of the anime. He is depicted as a top-ranking competitor, with the creator of Duel Monsters, Maximillion Pegasus, listing him among the best duelists he has ever seen, alongside legendary figures such as Yugi Muto and Seto Kaiba. His character is designed with silver formal wear, a black shirt, a loosely-fitting necktie, and grey hair sectioned into two distinct layers, with his blue eyes visible between them. Beyond dueling, he is also a pro-athlete who excels in extreme sports like skiing, skydiving, skysurfing, and surfing. In the Japanese version, it is also indicated that he holds a Ph.D. in two undisclosed subjects.
Aster is a well-mannered individual with good intentions, but he often displays a stubborn attitude and a pessimistic outlook that can blind him to the reality of a given situation. He is defined by an unshakable belief in destiny, which drives him to confront the most skilled opponents and pursue his goals despite overwhelming risks. Having lost his father, a card designer for Industrial Illusions, at a young age, Aster feels a deep-seated fear that he has not truly progressed as a person since that life-changing event. This leads to a dependency on father figures, such as his manager Sartorius or his legal guardian The D, a vulnerability that is unfortunately exploited as both men were influenced by a malevolent force.
Aster's primary motivation is to avenge his father and reclaim the Destiny Hero cards that were stolen from him, particularly the powerful Ultimate D-Card. He views the Hero cards as tools to be used for justice, initially despising Jaden Yuki for using his Elemental Heroes merely for fun. Describing himself as a dark hero, Aster is a vigilante who believes in ridding the world of crime by any means necessary, even employing unorthodox and illegal methods in his pursuit of justice. The trust he places in his Destiny Heroes is symbolic of his desire to control his own future, a power he feels was taken from him when his father was taken.
Aster enters the story as an anti-hero and a rival to Jaden Yuki. Sent by Sartorius to Duel Academy, he initially poses a significant threat, easily defeating Zane Truesdale in the Pro League and even defeating Jaden in their second duel. Their rivalry is unique as they both use Hero decks, but where Jaden plays for fun, Aster plays with grim determination. After realizing he was being manipulated by the Light of Destruction through Sartorius, Aster joins Jaden's side and becomes a good friend and ally. His other key relationships include his tragic bond with Sartorius, whom he promised as a child to save from his dark destiny, and his connection with his legal guardian, The D, who is ultimately revealed to be his father's killer.
Throughout the series, Aster undergoes significant development. He starts as an arrogant prodigy who believes he is always in control of destiny, only to discover he was a pawn in a larger scheme. His defeat at the hands of Jaden forces him to question his beliefs and the motives of those he trusted. The pinnacle of his development occurs when he confronts The D and learns the truth about his father's death. Using a card left for him by his father, Destiny Hero - The Dark Angel, Aster defeats his former guardian and frees his father's soul, finally achieving his revenge and reclaiming his legacy. Later, in the third year, he teams up with his former rival Zane in an alternate dimension to fight against the Supreme King, showing his evolution into a true hero who fights for others rather than just revenge.
In terms of abilities, Aster is one of the few duelists capable of defeating Jaden Yuki. His strategic prowess is exemplified by his ability to foresee the flow of a duel, setting events in motion turns ahead of time to secure victory. He is also one of the rare individuals who can see Duel Monster Spirits, though not to the same extent as Jaden. Physically, he is exceptionally agile and strong, capable of single-handedly defeating a grown criminal and evading capture with superhuman speed. His primary deck focuses on Hero monsters. He initially uses a mishmash deck to lose intentionally against Jaden, but his true strategy revolves around the Destiny Hero archetype, which focuses on controlling the flow of time and the future to orchestrate the opponent's defeat. He also uses Elemental Heroes, which caused initial confusion when he played cards Jaden had never seen before, such as Elemental Hero Phoenix Enforcer.
