Description
Son Gohan is the first child of the Saiyan warrior Goku and his Earthling wife Chi-Chi. He is named after Goku's adoptive grandfather, and his own name carries the meaning of cooked rice or a meal, reflecting a thematic naming convention within his family. Born with a naturally timid and gentle disposition, Gohan stands in stark contrast to his father, showing little innate passion for combat and preferring peaceful activities, particularly his studies. As a child, he is shy, intelligent, and easily frightened, though he possesses an immense and often uncontrollable hidden power that emerges in response to intense emotional duress, especially rage.

Gohan's journey is largely defined by the tension between his passive nature and the constant demand for him to become a warrior. Early in his life, he is thrust into a world of conflict after being kidnapped by his uncle, Raditz, an alien who reveals Goku's Saiyan heritage. In the aftermath of this confrontation, where Goku dies, the Namekian warrior Piccolo takes the four-year-old Gohan into the wilderness for a brutal year of survival training in preparation for an invasion by the Saiyans Vegeta and Nappa. Despite Piccolo's harsh methods, a deep bond forms between them, with Piccolo growing to see Gohan as the son he never had, a sentiment he demonstrates by sacrificing himself to save the boy from Nappa. This relationship establishes Piccolo as a crucial mentor and surrogate father figure alongside Goku.

Gohan's motivations are not driven by a Saiyan lust for battle but by a desire to protect his loved ones. When forced to fight, his primary drive is the safety of his family and friends. This emotional core is the key to unlocking his phenomenal power. His most significant early achievement occurs during the battle with the bio-android Cell, where, after training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber with his father, he becomes the first character to achieve the Super Saiyan 2 transformation. In a fit of righteous fury over the suffering of his friends, Gohan unleashes this form to decisively defeat Cell, momentarily surpassing his father and saving the Earth at the age of only nine or ten.

Following the Cell Games, Gohan enters a period of peace and focuses on his mother's wish for him to become a scholar. By the time he is a teenager, he has adopted the alter ego of the Great Saiyaman, a somewhat flamboyant and clumsy superhero, to fight crime in Satan City while attending high school. During this period, he develops a relationship with Videl, the daughter of the champion Mr. Satan, who eventually discovers his secret identity and becomes his wife. However, his years of peace lead to a decline in his fighting abilities, making him notably weaker than he was as a child when new threats like the wizard Babidi and the monster Majin Buu emerge.

To combat Majin Buu, Gohan's latent potential is fully drawn out by the Elder Kai through a lengthy ritual. This state, often called Ultimate Gohan or the Potential Unleashed form, allows him to access his full power without needing to transform into a Super Saiyan. In this state, his appearance changes subtly, with a more confident and serious demeanor, slightly spikier hair, and a white aura. The resulting power is immense, far surpassing the Super Saiyan 3 transformation and allowing him to effortlessly dominate the powerful Super Buu. However, his overconfidence in this form leads to his defeat when Buu tricks him and absorbs Gotenks, overwhelming him. Nonetheless, this transformation remains the pinnacle of Gohan's natural abilities, achieved without the strain of standard Super Saiyan forms.

As an adult, Gohan ultimately fulfills his lifelong ambition of becoming a great scholar. He marries Videl, and they have a daughter named Pan. While he steps back from being the Earth's primary defender, a role that returns to Goku, he retains his status as one of the most powerful warriors in the universe, whose gentle heart and protective nature mask the incredible strength he is capable of wielding when necessary.
