TV-Series
Description
Kinue Crossroad is a character from the first season of the anime who lives in the Union Special Economic Zone of Japan. She is the older sister of Saji Crossroad and serves as a reporter for the Japan News Network. At the start of the story, she is twenty-two years old, born on July 22, 2285.
As a journalist, Kinue is characterized by her strong-willed and determined nature. She is committed to uncovering hard evidence and facts, refusing to be deterred from a story even when facing powerful interests. This tenacity is on full display during her investigation into Celestial Being, where she continues her work despite knowing that the company which owns her network is a major shareholder in industries she is probing. Her drive for the truth is implied to have been influenced by her late father, who was also a reporter.
In her personal life, Kinue is a caring and responsible figure for her younger brother, Saji. With their father imprisoned and deceased and their mother absent, she is forced to take care of him, often preparing his meals and looking out for his well-being. She is also somewhat protective of him, expressing concerns about his relationship with his girlfriend, Louise Halevy, and wondering if he made the right choice. She and Saji live next door to Setsuna F. Seiei, though she is never shown to interact with him directly.
Kinue's primary motivation and role in the story revolve around her obsession with Celestial Being and its founder, Aeolia Schenberg. She finds it difficult to believe that an organization promising to eradicate war through armed intervention has purely altruistic motives and is convinced there is a hidden agenda. She interviews several people with connections to Schenberg, including his great-grandson, in an attempt to discover the true purpose behind the Gundams. Her investigation grows increasingly dangerous as her leads begin to be killed. She eventually suspects that Laguna Harvey, the president of Linear Train Industries, is connected to her target and seeks an interview with him.
Her quest ultimately leads to her demise. After failing to get permission to speak with Laguna, Kinue sees Ali Al-Saachez leaving his estate. Believing she can obtain information, she stops his car and requests an interview. Al-Saachez, using the alias Gary Biaggi, agrees and offers to answer her questions if she rides along with him. During the drive, he reveals significant information about the GN Drives and his past, but his true nature as a war-crazed mercenary becomes clear. He drives her to a secluded alleyway where he stabs her, breaks her phone, and leaves her to die from blood loss. In her final moments, she reaches for a family photo. Her body is later found by authorities and identified by her grieving brother, Saji.
The aftermath of her death has a profound impact on Saji, who is told by her boss about her investigation into Aeolia Schenberg. This leads him to falsely conclude that Celestial Being killed her to silence her, fueling his anger and confusion for a significant portion of the story. While Saji never discovers that Ali Al-Saachez was her murderer, Kinue's pursuit of the truth marks her as a character who gets dangerously close to the secrets at the heart of the series' conflict, only to be silenced for knowing too much.
