Description
Marie Parfacy, also known by her super soldier designation Soma Peries, is a central character in Mobile Suit Gundam 00 whose story arc traces a journey from programmed weapon to self-determined individual. She was created as a genetically engineered designer baby at the Human Reform League’s Super Human Research Institute, the same facility that produced Allelujah Haptism. As a child she was known as Marie Parfacy and suffered from psychosomatic paralysis that left her unable to sense the outside world. A young Allelujah befriended her during that time, but her memories of this period were later suppressed when the institute overwrote her personality and molded her into Soma Peries, designated Super Soldier Number One.
In her initial role, Soma Peries served as a Second Lieutenant and mobile suit pilot for the Human Reform League, piloting a custom Tieren Taozi and later a GN-X. She was conditioned to be cold, mission-focused, and emotionally detached, viewing herself as superior to ordinary soldiers and to Allelujah, whom she considered a defective product for having destroyed the research facility. Despite her ruthless demeanor, she formed an unexpected bond with Colonel Sergei Smirnov, who treated her with a kindness she had never experienced; she came to regard him as a father figure. This attachment would later influence her decisions in combat.
Her deep mental and emotional connection with Allelujah, a fellow super soldier, caused confusion and conflict whenever they met on the battlefield. She initially harbored a personal grudge against the pilot of Gundam Kyrios, unaware that it was the same boy who had once been her friend. Over time, repeated encounters and Allelujah’s persistent recognition of her true identity began to break through her conditioning. In a climactic space battle, Allelujah discovered that Soma was indeed Marie, and the revelation, combined with their shared mental link, triggered the recovery of her suppressed childhood memories.
Once Soma reclaimed her identity as Marie Parfacy, she chose to defect from A-LAWS, the Earth Federation’s elite force to which she had been transferred, and align herself with Celestial Being. She joined the crew of the Ptolemaios and fought alongside the Gundam Meisters for the remainder of the conflict against A-LAWS and the Innovators. As Marie, her personality became warmer and more emotional. She retained the combat skills and memories from her time as Soma, but her motivations shifted from proving her superiority to protecting those she cared for, above all Allelujah. She piloted the GN Archer, a support mobile suit designed to operate in tandem with the Gundam Kyrios.
Her relationship with Allelujah is the cornerstone of her character development. The two share a profound bond rooted in their traumatic shared past at the institute. After the war, she left military service and began traveling the world with Allelujah on a pilgrimage, seeking peace and a new purpose. In the movie A Wakening of the Trailblazer, she continues to support Celestial Being on the sidelines, having fully integrated both sides of her identity: the disciplined soldier and the compassionate woman.
Notable abilities include surgically enhanced physical capabilities and a unique mental connection with Allelujah that allows them to sense each other’s presence and coordinate in battle. As a super soldier, her reflexes, combat instincts, and piloting skills are far beyond normal human levels, making her a formidable opponent on the battlefield. Her growth from a emotionally closed-off tool of war to a person capable of love and choice is central to her role in the story, completing Allelujah’s arc and embodying the theme of reclaiming one’s humanity.
