Description
Meyrin Hawke is a Coordinator and a character in the anime Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny. She is the younger sister of Lunamaria Hawke. As a ZAFT soldier, she serves as a mobile suit communications controller on the bridge of the Minerva, the ZAFT battleship that serves as a central setting for much of the series. Her official role is to manage communication control for the ship's mobile suit complement, a position she holds alongside colleagues such as Captain Talia Gladys and Arthur Trine.
Meyrin is characterized as a gentle, thoughtful, and sweet-natured young woman. She is sixteen years old during the events of the series. Despite being a soldier, she often displays the demeanor of an ordinary teenage girl and is not deeply driven by ideology or a desire to understand the war. She participates in the conflict largely because of her circumstances and duty rather than personal conviction. Her personality is marked by a quiet devotion and a strong sense of loyalty to those she admires.
Her primary motivation in the story becomes her growing admiration for Athrun Zala, a fellow ZAFT officer and a significant figure in the conflict. Meyrin develops feelings for Athrun, though these feelings are not fully reciprocated by him. Her loyalty to Athrun ultimately outweighs her commitment to ZAFT and even her bond with her sister. When Athrun becomes disillusioned with the direction of ZAFT and Chairman Gilbert Durandal and decides to defect, Meyrin chooses to follow him. This act of desertion creates a significant rift between her and Lunamaria, who remains loyal to ZAFT. Meyrin abandons her post on the Minerva and her sister to join Athrun and support the Three Ships Alliance, an independent faction opposing Durandal's plans. She subsequently serves as a communications officer on the Eternal, the flagship of the Lacus Clyne faction. Her defection underscores her belief in Athrun's cause and her willingness to sacrifice her family ties and military career for what she sees as right.
Meyrin's role in the story is that of a supporting bridge crew member who becomes a key figure in Athrun's personal storyline. While she is not a mobile suit pilot or a primary combatant, her decision to defect is a pivotal narrative moment that highlights the moral divisions caused by the war. Her development is subtle but clear: she begins as a dutiful if somewhat reluctant soldier and evolves into an individual who makes a personal moral choice, asserting her own agency despite the personal cost. Her key relationships are with her sister Lunamaria, whose closeness is fractured by her defection, and with Athrun, whom she follows out of loyalty and admiration.
In terms of notable abilities, Meyrin is a capable communications and bridge officer, handling the technical and tactical demands of coordinating mobile suits in combat. As a Coordinator, she possesses genetically enhanced capabilities common to her kind, though her specific talents are administrative and communicative rather than combat-oriented. She appears again in the film Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom, where her role continues within the same faction.
