Description
Mamori Anezaki is a main character in the story. She is a high school student at Deimon Private Senior High School and serves as the club manager for the Deimon Devil Bats, the school’s American football team. Mamori is the childhood friend of the protagonist, Sena Kobayakawa. Their mothers met in a cooking class, and the two have been close ever since. Mamori has a mixed heritage through her mother, who is half-Japanese and half-American, making Mamori one-quarter American and three-quarters Japanese. From an early age, she took on a protective, almost maternal role toward Sena, shielding him from bullies during their elementary and middle school years. This habit of looking out for him continues into high school.

When Sena is forced by Yoichi Hiruma to join the Devil Bats, Mamori initially opposes the idea but eventually decides to join the team herself as its manager. Her stated purpose is to watch over Sena and prevent what she sees as bullying from Hiruma and the other team members. Over time, however, Mamori develops a genuine interest in the sport. Despite having no prior knowledge of American football, she memorizes all the rules in a single night and begins to analyze opponents’ plays and devise strategies to counter them. She accomplishes this work entirely on paper because she has trouble using computers, which gives her an analog, methodical approach. Her tactical contributions become vital to the team’s success, and she earns the respect of the players even as she continues to clash with the manipulative Hiruma.

Mamori is academically gifted, excelling in all her subjects except art, which she performs poorly in. She also serves on the school’s disciplinary committee. Her personality is defined by a strong sense of responsibility, fierce loyalty to her friends, and a nurturing, caring nature. She is highly organized and detail-oriented, which helps her manage the team’s logistics and training schedules. Although she and Hiruma frequently argue, she eventually comes to see a softer side of him and acknowledges his dedication to the team. Her relationship with Sena remains the emotional core of her character: she supports him privately, and learns the secret that he is the masked player Eyeshield 21 during a key match, a revelation that deepens their trust.

Throughout the series, Mamori grows from a purely protective figure into a confident, independent strategist who genuinely believes in the team’s goal of reaching the Christmas Bowl. Her notable abilities include rapid acquisition of complex rules, keen observational skills, and the capacity to formulate effective game plans under pressure. She is also a motivational presence who encourages the players when they struggle. While she lacks physical strength—her bench press is listed at only 20 kilograms—her intellectual and emotional contributions are indispensable to the Devil Bats.
