Description
Lief is a sixteen-year-old boy who serves as the main protagonist of the anime series. He was raised in the city of Del as the son of a blacksmith named Jarred and his wife Anna, living in a humble forge. Unbeknownst to him for most of his early life, he is actually the son of King Endon and Queen Sharn, the true heir to the throne of Deltora. His identity was hidden to protect him from the Shadow Lord after the invasion of the kingdom. On the night of his sixteenth birthday, his adoptive parents reveal that they have been keeping the Belt of Deltora, a powerful magical object that once protected the land, but its seven gems are missing. Lief is entrusted with the quest to find the gems and restore the belt. He is accompanied by Barda, a former palace guard who had been disguised as a beggar, and later by Jasmine, a wild girl from the Forests of Silence.
At the start of the series, Lief is described as hot-headed, impatient, and somewhat cocky. He is brave and not afraid of the Grey Guards who enforce the Shadow Lord's rule, often provoking them. He is also smart, agile, and resourceful. Over the course of his journey, he matures significantly. He grows in wisdom, patience, and leadership ability. He is courageous and highly trustworthy, able to resist temptations that would cause him to abandon his quest. His friends and family give him strength in difficult moments. Despite his initial arrogance, he becomes a capable leader and a thoughtful king. He also has a fear of being left alone, which is highlighted during certain trials.
Lief's primary motivation is to free Deltora from the tyranny of the Shadow Lord by restoring the Belt of Deltora. Later, after becoming king, he takes on further quests to find an heir to wear the belt while he bears a false one, and to destroy the Four Sisters, a plot by the Shadow Lord to rot the land. He is driven by a strong sense of duty and justice.
In the story, Lief is the central hero who leads the quest. He becomes the king of Deltora after learning his true lineage at the end of the first major quest. His role evolves from a rebellious youth to a responsible monarch.
Key relationships include his bond with Barda, who acts as a mentor and protector, and with Jasmine, a fierce and independent companion who eventually becomes his wife. He also shares a connection with his adoptive parents, Jarred and Anna, and later meets his biological parents, Endon and Sharn. Over time, his relationship with Jasmine deepens into love, and they marry at the end of the Dragons of Deltora series.
Lief develops notably over the course of the series. He begins as a reckless and impulsive boy, but through the challenges of the quest, he learns to control his temper, think before acting, and show patience. He becomes more secretive in the second series due to the need to protect the heir, but returns to a more open nature in the third series. His journey transforms him into a wise and just king who understands his people.
His notable abilities include skill with a sword, quick thinking and problem-solving, and effective leadership. He wears the Belt of Deltora, which, when complete, grants protection and power. He also carries a magic cloak made by his mother Anna.
