Description
Jed is the primary antagonist of the animated film Hunter × Hunter: The Last Mission. He is portrayed as a legendary and immensely powerful warrior who shares a deep, fated history with Isaac Netero, the chairman of the Hunter Association. In the distant past, Jed was the leader of the Shadow, a covert organization affiliated with the Hunter Association. However, he and his followers were ultimately killed by Netero for committing terrible crimes using a forbidden power. Consumed by an undying grudge, Jed’s hatred was so potent that it allowed for his rebirth years later, brought back by three devoted disciples who performed a ritualistic contract to revive him.

Jed’s entire being is defined by his overwhelming hatred for the Hunter Association, a sentiment so powerful it resurrected him from death. He believes all Hunters are irredeemably evil, blaming them for the hardships he and his people suffered. The chairman, Netero, is the primary focus of his vengeance, the man he swore to never forgive for the massacre of his comrades. While nearly blinded by his rage, Jed is not without complexity. He displays genuine care for his three followers—Shura, Rengoku, and Gaki—weeping openly at their deaths and vowing to honor their sacrifices. He also shows a degree of pragmatism, ordering his men not to harm innocents or individuals, such as Leorio, who are not directly related to their mission against the Hunters. Despite this, his hatred is all-consuming, leading him to impose a deadly contract on his disciples where they would perish if they lost to a Hunter, binding their fates to his own vengeful crusade.

The character’s primary motivation is to expose the Hunter Association’s dark history, specifically a classified document known as the Black Report, and to annihilate the organization led by Netero. To achieve this, he and his followers seal off the Heavens Arena, take numerous hostages, and capture Netero himself. Jed’s role in the story is to serve as a dark mirror to the Hunter Association, forcing Netero and the protagonists to confront the violent sins of the past that were buried to maintain the present order. His plan involves using his unique power to corrupt others and publicly dismantle the Hunters’ reputation before destroying them.

Key relationships are central to Jed’s character. His bond with Isaac Netero is the most significant, having evolved from a seemingly amicable rivalry in the past to a bitter, life-and-death struggle. Netero sees Jed as a man destroyed by his own rage, while Jed views Netero as the ultimate symbol of his oppression. Equally important is his connection to his disciples, Shura, Rengoku, and Gaki. They are not merely subordinates but are described as family and blood brothers who gave him a second chance at life. However, this relationship is parasitic; to fuel his power, Jed forms a blood contract with them that ultimately leads to their deaths, demonstrating that his hatred ultimately supersedes even his affection.

Throughout the film, Jed does not undergo a traditional redemption arc. He remains fixed on his vengeance until the very end, declaring no regrets even after being defeated. His most notable development is a fleeting, begrudging recognition of the compassion shown by the protagonist, Gon Freecss. Gon’s empathy momentarily pierces through Jed’s hatred, but it is not enough to change his course. In his final moments, he still swears revenge against Netero before his body disintegrates into golden dust, leaving behind only half of a broken Hunter coin from a more peaceful time long ago.

Jed’s notable abilities are rooted in On, a supernatural power that is the antithesis of Nen. While Nen is described as the energy of life, On is the energy of death and is born from negative emotions like hatred and grudge. On is portrayed as being exceptionally powerful and not bound by the usual Nen categories, allowing a user to master all types with one hundred percent proficiency. Jed can transmit On to others through his blood; anyone who comes into contact with it will have their Nen sealed and be forced to make a contract with him, often to deadly effect. His signature ability is called The Grudge of One-Hundred Demons: Rakshasa, which conjures a gigantic, demonic construct behind him. This Rakshasa is directly comparable in power and scale to Netero’s own Hundred-Type Guanyin Bodhisattva, capable of trading devastating blows, stretching its limbs to strike distant foes, and firing powerful beams of On energy. This power allows Jed to fight on equal terms with a young Netero in his prime, making him a threat on a level far beyond most enemies encountered in the series.
