Description
In the universe of Soul Eater, the character known as Death Scythe is a title held by the weapon Spirit Albarn, who serves as the personal weapon of Lord Death, the headmaster of the Death Weapon Meister Academy. Formerly known simply by his human name, Spirit, he earned the title of Death Scythe after successfully consuming ninety-nine evil human souls and one witch soul, a feat that signifies the highest class of Demon Weapon. His name is often used interchangeably with his title, though many who know him personally, including Lord Death and Doctor Franken Stein, continue to call him Spirit.

Spirit is a man whose personality is marked by a series of stark contradictions. On the surface, he appears to be a rather pathetic and comical figure, driven by a notorious weakness for women. This flaw was the direct cause of his divorce from his wife, Kami, which occurred about a month before the story begins due to his constant flirting. He is often seen visiting clubs or weeping dramatically over his failed marriage and his daughter Maka's apparent disgust for him. He is extremely sensitive and wears his heart on his sleeve, frequently running through the halls of the academy yelling about how much he loves his daughter, only to be completely ignored or rebuffed by her. Despite this lecherous and silly demeanor, he is consistently shown to be a warm, caring, sensitive, and genuinely kind-hearted man. His loyalty to his family is absolute; even though his flirtations ruined his marriage, he remains insanely devoted to his ex-wife, whom he still lovingly calls Mama, and his daughter.

Beneath his goofy exterior lies a profound sense of responsibility and compassion, particularly towards children. He is shown to be deeply protective of Maka, ready to leap to her aid at the slightest sign of trouble, though he is usually stopped by Lord Death, who insists that she must grow on her own. This protective instinct extends beyond his own family, as demonstrated when he weeps in rage upon witnessing Medusa Gorgon's casual and cruel abandonment of her own child, Crona. He claims this intense sympathy for a child in such a situation is a common feeling shared by fathers, highlighting that his paternal nature is a core component of his identity. He is also a loyal friend, maintaining a complex relationship with his former meister, Franken Stein. Although Stein used to perform disturbing experiments on Spirit's body during their partnership, and Spirit still suffers nightmares about being dissected, he continues to work alongside him without genuine malice.

Spirit's primary motivation is the safety and happiness of his daughter, Maka Albarn. He deeply regrets the pain his infidelity caused his family and desperately seeks Maka's approval and love, though his clumsy and overbearing methods usually drive her further away. He is ashamed of how little he feels he can do for her as a father, yet he constantly looks for opportunities to watch over her from a distance. Beyond his familial drive, he possesses a strong sense of duty as Lord Death's weapon. He takes his position and its authority seriously, and it is strongly implied by other Death Scythes and even Lord Death himself that his power is immense. Had he been present at Lord Death's side during the revival of the Kishin Asura, it is suggested that his master would have been able to defeat and prevent the god of fear from escaping.

As a weapon, Spirit is a master of his craft. In his weapon form, he transforms into a large, elegant, and plain black scythe, the handle of which resembles a cross. This form is incredibly durable, capable of blocking powerful magical attacks. As a Death Scythe, he is one of the most formidable weapons in existence and can perform the powerful Witch Hunt attack. His proficiency is such that Lord Death considers him the one true Death Scythe among all others of that class. In the story, he often acts as a supporting pillar from the highest levels of the academy. While his main role is to serve Lord Death, he temporarily steps in as a teacher and is frequently dispatched on the most dangerous missions, often partnered again with Stein to confront threats like the Demon Sword Ragnarok and the witch Medusa. Throughout the series, his relationship with Maka shows hints of slow development; while she still finds him embarrassing, there are moments where her true love for her father peeks through her harsh exterior, suggesting a potential for future reconciliation.
