Description
Nunnally Vi Britannia is a central supporting character in Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2. Born on October 25 in approximately 2003 a.t.b. to Emperor Charles zi Britannia and Marianne vi Britannia, she was the younger sister of Lelouch vi Britannia and was once 87th in line of succession to the Britannian throne. As a young girl she lived happily with her mother and brother at the Imperial Aries Villa. Her life changed dramatically when her mother was assassinated; Nunnally was caught in the attack and suffered critical injuries that left her legs paralyzed and her vision gone. Her blindness was later revealed to have been induced by her father's Geass as a form of protection, though she believed it to be the result of the trauma of witnessing her mother's death. Judged weak by her father and deemed fit only for a potential political marriage, she and Lelouch were sent to Japan as political prisoners. Following the Britannian invasion of Japan, the siblings were sheltered by the Ashford family and lived under the assumed identities of Lelouch and Nunnally Lamperouge, with Nunnally attending Ashford Academy's middle school as a second-year student.

In personality, Nunnally is gentle, kindhearted, and compassionate. She dislikes conflict, treats others with consistent courtesy, and notably prefers the term Japanese over the derogatory Eleven. Despite the hardships she has endured, she holds an enduring hope for a peaceful future and believes the world can be changed through kindness and reconciliation rather than force. She possesses a deep emotional sensitivity that lets her perceive the feelings of those around her, and she displays firm resolve when her principles are at stake, such as when she insisted that a redevelopment plan be rewritten so it would not burden the people of Area 11.

Her motivations center on creating a world where people can live in peace and on honoring the wishes of those she loved, especially her half-sister Euphemia li Britannia. In R2 she reappears as the new Viceroy of Area 11 and works to revive the Special Administrative Zone of Japan that Euphemia had envisioned, even cooperating with Zero despite his public status as a traitor. She genuinely believes in gentle, gradual reform as the proper path to change, standing in contrast to her brother's willingness to use coercion and force.

Her relationship with Lelouch is the emotional center of her character. The two share a deep mutual devotion, and Nunnally states that she loves Lelouch more than anyone else. Lelouch's commitment to building a gentler world for her is a driving motivation behind his actions, while she trusts him completely even though she is unaware of his identity as Zero for much of the story. Her bond with Suzaku Kururugi is also significant; she is extremely fond of him, is relieved when he is released from custody and joins them at Ashford Academy, and later senses that he is not being fully honest with her after he becomes a Knight of the Round. Sayoko Shinozaki serves as her primary caretaker and protector. Her relationship with her father Charles is distant and complicated, shaped by his willingness to discard her, while the memory of her mother Marianne influences her gentle worldview and her desire to understand the truth of what happened in the past.

Her role in the story deepens as events unfold. After the Black Rebellion she goes missing, and in the second season she re-emerges as the Governor of Area 11. During the Second Battle of Tokyo she is believed to have been caught in the F.L.E.I.J.A. blast, but she survives and later appears aboard the floating fortress Damocles as a candidate for the throne, supported by Schneizel el Britannia, who is secretly manipulating her. Believing she must atone for her brother's sins after he seizes the imperial throne, she prepares to turn the Damocles into a symbol of hatred meant to unite the world, a plan that closely mirrors Lelouch's own. In their final confrontation, her willpower proves strong enough to break the Geass imposed on her eyes by her father, restoring her sight. Lelouch then uses his own Geass to take the weapon key from her, telling her that he loves her before he leaves. Following the events surrounding his death, she inherits the throne, comes to understand the true purpose behind Lelouch's self-sacrifice as the tyrant emperor, and dedicates herself to preserving world peace, later serving as an honorary advisor to the World Humanitarian Organization and traveling to various regions in that capacity.

Nunnally has no combat abilities or supernatural powers. Her notable strengths are emotional and perceptual. She has a heightened sensitivity to the feelings and intentions of others, and she can tell when someone is lying simply by holding their hand. Her empathy, patience, and moral clarity make her a stabilizing and inspirational presence for those around her, and her attentiveness to the welfare of ordinary people defines her approach to governance. Even though she is blind, she continues to enjoy drawing, and her quiet resilience and hopefulness define her as a person who endures immense hardship without losing her compassion for others.
