TV-Series
Description
Nina Einstein is a student at Ashford Academy and a member of the Student Council. She is initially portrayed as a shy, quiet, and studious individual who keeps to herself and interacts little with the other council members. She perceives herself as unattractive and powerless, which contributes to deep self-loathing. Despite this, she possesses a gentle and strong-willed nature, as well as a prodigious talent for science, particularly in nuclear physics. Her extensive knowledge in this field is highly regarded even by the brilliant engineer Lloyd.
Nina experiences a traumatic event prior to the series that leaves her with a deep-seated, xenophobic fear of Japanese people, whom Britannia calls Elevens. This trauma makes her visibly uncomfortable and terrified in their presence, a reaction that is distinct from the contempt or superiority shown by many other Britannians. During a hostage crisis at a hotel, she is rescued and comforted by Princess Euphemia li Britannia, which transforms into an intense, almost dependent admiration for the princess.
The news of Euphemia’s death at the hands of Zero drives Nina into a state of rage and desire for vengeance. This motivation channels her scientific abilities into the creation of a weapon of mass destruction. In the second season, now eighteen years old, she works under Prince Schneizel el Britannia as the head of the research team In Vogue, where she completes the development of the F.L.E.I.J.A., a devastating nuclear bomb. Her appearance shifts from a student in glasses with twin braids to a more professional look with a ponytail and a red dress with a white cape.
After witnessing the F.L.E.I.J.A.’s first use in combat and the horrific scale of its destruction, Nina is overcome with shock and guilt. She leaves Schneizel’s side and dedicates herself to creating a countermeasure, the F.L.E.I.J.A. Eliminator. Her search for atonement drives her to cooperate with Lelouch, even though she cannot forgive him for Euphemia’s death. She later works alongside Lloyd and Cécile at the same research institute, and in the years following the conflict, her commitment to science shifts toward finding peaceful applications for her research. She also gradually confronts and overcomes her xenophobia, supported by interactions with Japanese characters such as Suzaku. Her key relationships include her childhood friend Milly Ashford, her idealized princess Euphemia, her employer Schneizel, and her former enemy Lelouch. Her defining ability is her exceptional intellect in nuclear physics, which she uses first to build a horrifying weapon and later to try to undo its effects.
