Description
Milly Ashford is a supporting character in Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2. She is the granddaughter of Ruben K. Ashford, the superintendent of Ashford Academy, and serves as the president of the Student Council. Born into a faltering Britannian noble family, the Ashfords lost their nobility status after the assassination of Empress Marianne, whom they had supported. Milly is an energetic and extroverted young woman, known for her love of throwing extravagant school-wide events and parties. She possesses a playful and mischievous nature, often teasing her friends about their personal affairs, such as Shirley Fenette’s crush on Lelouch Lamperouge. However, her teasing is never malicious and is calculated to bring levity to those around her, especially during difficult times. Beneath her lighthearted exterior, she is a wise and tactful confidante, offering genuine support and insightful advice to her peers, as seen when she comforts Kallen Kozuki about her complicated home life.

Milly is one of the few people who know Lelouch’s true identity as a former prince of Britannia, a secret her family has kept since they took in Lelouch and his sister Nunnally after Marianne’s death. She harbors a secret romantic affection for Lelouch, but she understands that her family’s precarious social standing requires her to marry a noble. To restore the Ashford family’s status, an arranged marriage is made between Milly and Earl Lloyd Asplund. Despite this obligation, Milly remains devoted to her friends and her role at the academy. Following the events of the first season, she intentionally fails her examinations in order to remain on campus with her friends for another year. During R2, she continues to act as the lively heart of the student council, organizing events and maintaining a sense of normalcy amidst the escalating conflict.

Over the course of the series, Milly’s development is subtle but significant. She matures from a carefree schemer into someone who consciously chooses her own path. Eventually, she earns enough credits to graduate, breaks off her engagement with Lloyd, and pursues a career as a weather forecaster for a local television station, indicating her desire for independence and a life outside aristocratic expectations. Milly has no supernatural or combat abilities; her strengths lie in her social intelligence, her ability to read people, and her talent for fostering community and morale among her classmates. Her key relationships include her friendship with Lelouch, whom she treats as an equal and often tasks with student council duties; her close bond with fellow council members Shirley, Rivalz Cardemonde, and Nina Einstein; and her unrequited affection for Lelouch, which she handles with grace and practicality. Rivalz harbors romantic feelings for her, but whether she returns them is left ambiguous. Throughout both seasons, Milly serves as a grounding presence, reminding those around her that moments of joy and connection are worth preserving even in a world at war.
