Maurice is one of the three orphan children adopted by Eureka and later by Renton Thurston in the anime Eureka Seven. He is five years old when the story begins. He and his siblings, Maeter and Linck, are discovered under a pile of corpses by Eureka in the aftermath of the massacre at Ciudades del Cielo. Despite his young age, Maurice is remarkably mature and perceptive. He is the only one of the three children who regularly suspects that the adults around him may be hiding the truth or softening reality to keep the children calm, and he is the most sensitive to changes in Eureka's emotional state. He is deeply protective of her and views her as his mother, referring to her as Mama throughout the series. Maurice remembers the circumstances of his original mother's death, but he does not hold any resentment toward Eureka and, in fact, embraces her as his new mother with considerable intensity. His primary motivation is to protect his family, especially Eureka, and to maintain the stability of the small unit formed by her and his siblings. In his role within the story, Maurice functions as one of Eureka's emotional anchors and as a minor but persistent source of tension within the Gekkostate group, particularly in his interactions with Renton. He is the most resistant of the children to Renton's presence and to the growing romantic relationship between Renton and Eureka, reflecting his fear that an outsider might disrupt the family he has found. Over the course of the series, however, he gradually begins to accept Renton, acknowledging his achievements and eventually coming to view him as an adoptive father. By the end of the story, he is formally known as Maurice Thurston. He does not possess any combat or supernatural abilities, but his notable qualities are his emotional intelligence, his strong sense of responsibility, and his protective instincts, which manifest in his careful observation of the adults and his willingness to confront those he perceives as threats to his family.
