Description
Durham Glaster is a character who appears as a minor antagonist. Standing 178 centimeters tall and weighing 83 kilograms, he is a man of twenty-six years with a birthday on February 29. His appearance is distinctly western, resembling a cowboy with a high-crowned, wide-brimmed hat and a tan jacket. The most notable feature of his attire is a mask covering his mouth and nose, which extends outward like a bird's beak and has sharp, canine teeth protruding from the upper jaw. His physical build, combined with his overall look, establishes him as an imposing figure.
His past is largely obscure, but it is known that he was a dangerous criminal before the events of the story, described as a pure barbarian with a deranged thirst for blood and violence. He murdered as naturally as he breathed, acting on violent impulses without second thoughts or understanding the consequences of his actions. This sadistic nature, which might even surpass that of other antagonists, was the primary reason he joined the organization known as the Apostles of the Star, as it allowed him to kill and hurt people as he saw fit.
Durham Glaster is driven by an immense ego and a deep-seated need to prove his superiority as a gunman. He takes great offense to the reputation of the protagonist, who is hailed as the world's strongest gunfighter. Believing himself to be the most powerful gunfighter, he becomes obsessed with defeating this rival to claim that title for himself. This overconfidence leads him to vastly overestimate his own abilities and ignore his limits, a flaw that ultimately contributes to his downfall.
In the story, he operates as a member of the Apostles of the Star. He is first seen during a large-scale terrorist attack, where his bloodthirsty nature is on full display as he eagerly breaches the perimeter and engages in slaughter. His personal quest to challenge the protagonist begins when he disobeys orders and ventures out on his own. To lure his target out, he attacks an associate and then storms a hideout, severely injuring another associate and leaving a message in blood to force a confrontation. He meets the protagonist in a forest on the edge of a city, where a fierce battle takes place. Despite having fighting abilities comparable to elite agents, he is outmatched and defeated. Following his humiliating loss, he returns to his organization's hideout, still arrogant and refusing to accept that he was bested fairly. When questioned by the leader of his organization, he states his intention to try again, but he is killed by the leader as punishment for his arrogance and insubordination. His death marks him as the first member of the Apostles of the Star to die.
His key relationships are defined by his arrogance and violent nature. He holds a rivalry with the protagonist, not seeing anything special about his opponent and failing to understand why his own leader holds such respect for the man. His interactions with his own associates are characterized by disdain and open defiance, as he refuses to answer to them and declares that he will go where he pleases, leading to his eventual execution. His character shows no positive development, as even after a clear defeat, he clings to his delusions of superiority and fails to learn from his mistakes, maintaining his arrogant belief that he is the better gunman.
Regarding abilities, he wields a power known as Tao called Shot, which reflects his murderous and violent nature. This ability allows him to channel his ki into his revolver to fire powerful blasts of pure energy. He can either concentrate this power to fire a single, devastating blast or fire many smaller projectiles in rapid succession with nearly unlimited ammunition. He is also a highly skilled marksman and gunfighter with excellent reflexes and fighting skills. In addition to his revolver, he has a special cannon hidden within the mouth of his mask, which he can use as a backup weapon to fire huge streams of ki. However, despite these formidable powers, his overconfidence prevents him from effectively using them against a superior opponent.
