Description
Kazamachi Shogen is a character from the Kouga Manjidani clan, selected by the clan elder Danjo to be one of the ten warriors representing Kouga in the decisive conflict against the Iga clan. His physical appearance is distinctly inhuman, marked by a bulbous hunchback, elongated and gangly limbs, oversized hands and feet, a flat nose, and blood-red eyes. He has a long tongue that protrudes through the gap where his front teeth should be, and he often wears a sleeveless black vest displaying a red spider emblem on the back.

Shogen possesses a personality that is as unsettling as his appearance. He is a sadistic individual who derives pleasure from taunting and terrifying his opponents before moving in for the kill. His confidence in his own abilities is immense, bordering on arrogance, as he showed no fear when ambushed by four Iga ninjas simultaneously, believing he could destroy them all. This overconfidence is coupled with a stubborn and defiant nature. He explicitly ignores a prophetic warning from his ally, Jubei Jimushi, who cautioned that misfortune would befall him near water. Determined to prove the prophecy wrong, Shogen goes fishing, an act of defiance that demonstrates his unwillingness to heed advice. He also displays a complete lack of fear in the face of death, showing no hesitation even when an enemy holds a knife to his throat.

His primary motivation is to serve the Kouga clan and to fulfill his role in the coming war. He is eager to eliminate the Iga names from the sacred ninja scroll, viewing the conflict as an opportunity to demonstrate his lethal prowess. In the story, Shogen is entrusted with a mission of the highest importance: to carry the declaration of war back to the Kouga village after the historic treaty between the two clans is broken at Sunpu Castle. His role in the narrative, however, is cut short when he is ambushed on his return journey. He engages four Iga warriors—Koshirou Chikuma, Nenki Mino, Rousai Azuki, and Hotarubi—and initially succeeds in trapping three of them in his sticky web. His downfall comes when Hotarubi's butterfly swarm distracts him, creating an opening for Nenki to strike him fatally in the head with a sickle.

Key relationships for Shogen are primarily with his Kouga comrades. He has a notable interaction with Jubei Jimushi, whose warning he scoffs at. His primary antagonist relationship is with Yashamaru of the Iga, whom he fights in the initial duel at Sunpu Castle, and later with the four Iga ninjas who ambush him. His death scene involves a final, brutal interaction with Hotarubi. Even after being mortally wounded and with a knife at his throat, Shogen spits his sticky phlegm onto her face in a final act of defiance, which sends her into a rage as she kills him. His development is minimal due to his early death; he serves as a powerful force for Kouga whose potential is cut short, demonstrating the high stakes and sudden lethality of the ninja war. He also appears to be part of a larger family or lineage of spider-themed ninja, as later a character with a very similar appearance attacks the Kouga village.

Shogen’s notable abilities are all derived from his spider-like physiology. He is highly agile and can scale vertical surfaces and hang upside down with ease, mimicking the movements of a spider. His primary weapon is a super-adhesive, glue-like substance he spits from his mouth via his tongue. He can project this phlegm in various ways, including as small pellets for ranged attacks or as a thick stream. Most devastatingly, he can spray it through his teeth to create durable, sticky strands that he weaves into a large web, which is described as being one hundred times stickier than any conventional glue. This ability makes him one of the few Kouga ninja who specializes in direct combat rather than stealth or assassination.
