Description
Second Lieutenant Maria Ross is an Amestrian soldier stationed in Central City under the command of Major Alex Louis Armstrong. She is characterized as honest, decent, and caring, balancing her professional military duties with a warm, personable demeanor. Her ever-present partner is Sergeant Denny Brosh. She has a distinctive mole under her left eye.

Ross is first introduced when she and Brosh are assigned to guard and escort the Elric brothers, Edward and Alphonse, during their stay in Central. She quickly takes on a maternal or parental role toward the brothers, offering guidance and comfort. She treats them as children rather than merely as fellow soldiers, an approach that is evident when she slaps Edward for disobeying orders, an act that reflects her genuine concern for his well-being despite the difference in rank. She risks her life to calm Edward when he is absorbing dangerous red stone material inside Laboratory 5.

A major turning point in her story occurs when she is falsely accused of murdering Lieutenant Colonel Maes Hughes. Despite her protests of innocence, the military justice system offers her no defense because the alibi from her family is inadmissible. With no other recourse, she is forced to escape prison with the help of Barry the Chopper. Later, Colonel Roy Mustang stages her death by creating a fake corpse using bones, meat, and ammonia, burning it with flame alchemy to fool the authorities. Ross is then sent into exile in the eastern empire of Xing.

During her time in Xing, she remains committed to her friends and allies in Amestris. She eventually returns to assist Mustang in his coup against the corrupt government, demonstrating unwavering loyalty and bravery. Her motivations are rooted in a strong moral compass and a deep sense of responsibility. She is driven to protect those she cares about and to do what is right, even in the face of great personal risk. Despite her resilience, she also experiences vulnerability and fear, particularly when she is framed and forced to abandon her former life.

Ross’s key relationships include her close working partnership with Denny Brosh, her respectful but personal connection with Major Armstrong, her protective bond with the Elric brothers, and her alliance with Roy Mustang. Her notable abilities include competent combat skills and proficiency with firearms, as shown when she and Brosh disarm Barry the Chopper. Her character develops from a dutiful guardian figure to a fugitive and finally to a key participant in the resistance, embodying themes of justice, loyalty, and resilience in the face of false accusation.
